[oS-EN] Virtual desktops in Plasma
Hi, Trying KDE after at least a decade with XFCE. I use many virtual workspaces, or virtual desktops in KDE parlance. I have 6 in this laptop. In XFCE, you can move around using [Ctrl][Alt][Cursor-Key]. In KDE that doesn't work. There is [Ctrl][F1], [Ctrl][F2], etc. It works up to F4, but F5 and F6 don't work. Why, is this a bug? Something else? There is another method, which is moving the mouse to the edge and insisting, in my case 250mS (setup in "Screen Edges"). -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. they all work for me in tw kde/plasma. I now only keep four workspaces but can reach any using <ctrl><f#> or <ctrl><alt><left-right cursor>,
Why, is this a bug? Something else?

Then you have not tried if <ctrl><f5> works. And <ctrl><alt><left-right cursor> certainly doesn't work, nor is mentioned in the documentation I have seen. And you are probably using Tumbleweed. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from openSUSE 15.5 (Laicolasse))

not currently but it did in the past as did <ctrl><f6>.
And <ctrl><alt><left-right cursor> certainly doesn't work, nor is mentioned in the documentation I have seen.
has worked for me for years but newer installs do require setting up.
And you are probably using Tumbleweed.
most certainly, but you didn't set that criteria. I will try <ctrl><f5> and f6 later but cannot allocate the time atm. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet oftc

just added virtual desktops 5 & 6 and kwin shortcuts indicate <ctrl><f5> and ...f2 to switch to, tested and working removed added desktops -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet oftc

Where do you set that up? If some doc explains it, please point me to it.
And you are probably using Tumbleweed.

It is in my signature :-)

who pays attention the the many rediculous sig statements?
I will try <ctrl><f5> and f6 later but cannot allocate the time atm.
works as intended, explained in another email systemsettings -> shortcuts -> kwin note: settings are in alphabetical order switch to desktop may not be assigned -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet oftc

Sorry, that explanation is so short that it did not register before :-D Yeah, the jump to desktop 5 and 6 are disabled there. Creating them. There is no search in the right hand panel. Ah, found the entries. The default, disabled, is Meta-Ctrl-dn. It doesn't like ctrl-dn, it is assigned to some edit action I don't understand. Ok, issue solved. :-)
note: settings are in alphabetical order switch to desktop may not be assigned

The TW 20231005/5.27.8 currently booted here reproduces your description: only 1-3 out of 5 total are reachable via Ctrl-Fn. In the dark-ages, you could simply add the shortcuts to ~/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals e.g. (my most used favorites) Switch to Desktop 1=default(Ctrl+F1) Switch to Desktop 2=default(Ctrl+F2) Switch to Desktop 3=default(Ctrl+F3) Switch to Desktop 4=default(Ctrl+F4) Switch to Next Desktop=Win+Right Switch to Previous Desktop=Win+Left Window to Next Desktop=Win+Alt+Right Window to Previous Desktop=Win+Alt+Left If I recall correctly, the same applies to plasma, but it has been a while since I tried it. You used to be able to simply use kcontrol (ksettings) and then Regional & Accessibility -> Keyboard Shortcuts to set them. If that has been removed in plasma, just edit kdeglobals and find and try setting: Switch to Desktop 5=default(Ctrl+F5) Switch to Desktop 6=default(Ctrl+F6) (you should be able to find the relevant Plasma setting -- may be similar if not exactly the same) -- David C. Those two are taken, they have a very funny effect that I can't explain, nor can imagine the purpose :-D
Window to Next Desktop=Win+Alt+Right Window to Previous Desktop=Win+Alt+Left
These two cycle through the current apps in the window
