Hi all, is there a special 'OpenSUSE Whishlist' for feature requests? I just came across the website of the Elektra Project (http://elektra.sourceforge.net) and I thought it would be nice if OpenSUSE was one of the first Linux Distros that migrate to use this Registry-System! Just an idea... Cu, Jörg.
Hi, please have a look at http://www.opensuse.org/index.php/How_to_participate#Suggest_New_Software You just should open such a wish at the official place. Chances are that this will be included. Berthold On Tue, 9 Aug 2005, Jörg Hermsdorf wrote:

You could file an "enhancement" severity bug.

I'll try to put this politely: Don't hold your breath. And perhaps I simply didn't really understand the project, but to me this looks like ridiculous, unneccessary and based on misunderstood assumptions. In any case it would mean to rewrite nearly all software in the distribution, which certainly is not going to happen. Besides, don't all Windows users whine especially about the registry? At least that's the impression I get when I am too slow to escape computer discussions with Windows users. But discussion of Elektra is surely beyond the scope of this list. Rasmus

Berthold is right of course: read the documentation and chose the product "SUSE Linux Package Whishlist". Sorry 'bout that, it's been a long day. Rasmus

Seems to be a long day for me too. No, please. YaST is doing fine, why change to APT? What would, perhaps, be interesting is a command-line front-end to YaST that allowed you to install, uninstall, search for packages and so on. There's y2pmsh but it's supposed to be experimental. -- Víctor Fernández Martínez Gabinete de prensa de PoLinux [www.polinux.upv.es]. Usuario de Linux registrado #312284 en http://counter.li.org.

For all the software out there that is not included in SUSE itself, like playing DVD's, wmdrawer, ccze, Even with the amount of software available with each distro, there will always be some things that will NOT be included and that a user would like. Also for upgrading from version to version. I do not see it a a replacement. I see it as an adition to what YAST already is doing. A lot of people already use apt4rpm and synaptic. This could be an addition to those who would like to use it.

I use pin to search and then do `yast -i package` for instalation. Works like a charm for me. Uninstall I do with rpm -e. Writing a script to include all three should be easy. houghi -- The 80's -- when you can't tell hairstyles from chemotherapy.

Oh, I understand. Well, I think having the possibility to install and use it is ok as long as it doesn't replace YaST as the default option. -- Víctor Fernández Martínez Gabinete de prensa de PoLinux [www.polinux.upv.es]. Usuario de Linux registrado #312284 en http://counter.li.org.

I have had little or no trouble getting anything I wanted installed on 9.3 However there are occasions where I need to revert to the command line. One of the greatest strengths of SuSE is YaST and I would hate to see it tampered with in the slightest. If alternate methods are Incorporated I would like to see them stay just that - alternate methods with no attempt to integrate them with YaST. John Abbott - still a learner at this advanced age

Hello, Víctor Fernández Martínez wrote: then others (I think it depends on the bugzilla account permissions whether you can access the package wishlist, which is probably a mistake.)

Hmm, while I would like to see apt4rpm to be included, why replace YaST?
If I'm not mistaken, then YaST of 10.0 is based on YUM metadata and I vaguely remember that the YUM format is also supported by apt4rpm. In any case, for YUM you can use ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/10.0-i386/yum/ and for APT (might get depricated since SUSE uses now YUM in YAST) see: http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm/home.html Tobias

Not replace, add. Under Software an other icon. houghi -- Pure drivel tends to drive ordinary drivel off of the TV screen.

Do you mean they're going to base YaST on the YUM metadata format or are they going to base on the whole YUM? I've tested YUM on Fedora and it was horrible. It updated the repositories just when it wanted (not when I wanted) and it was terribly slow. I even had to wait more than one minute just to make a "yum install something", and if he updated the repositories it took even longer. :( Urpmi would be IMO a much better approach. Anyway, YaST as now is, works fine so why change it? -- Víctor Fernández Martínez Gabinete de prensa de PoLinux [www.polinux.upv.es]. Usuario de Linux registrado #312284 en http://counter.li.org.

We allow the metadata as additional format to what we currently use,

Elektra support needs quite some work within KDE, Gnome and some other parts to really to support it. It is on the evalutation list for KDE 4, so I would prefer to wait for that. bye adrian -- Adrian Schroeter SuSE AG, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nuernberg, Germany email: adrian@suse.de
