Re: [opensuse] Still trying to get DVD to work
Yast knows when the distro DVD is loaded, but that's it. I have fought with this problem since I installed 10.2 on 7Jan07 and it is to the point that if I cannot resolve the issue, I am kissing Suse goodbye, as the system is almost worthless to me if I cannot use the cd/dvd drive.
who owns the drive? who are you signed in as when trying to access the drive? at some point drive permissions must have been changed, maybe have been changed to root only read? the default is set to let everyone read and see the drive. this would explain why only yast sees it, you have to sign in as root to use yast. why dont you change the drive back to let everyone read it? sign in as root, open konqueror, find the drive, right click, choose properties, its obvious how to change from there. good luck. only idea I have. -- 4:40pm up 7 days 4:48, 3 users, load average: 0.46, 0.55, 0.62 powered by OpenSuse 10.2 - registered Linux user 412217 http://norwichlinuxusersgroup.com ------------------------------------------------------- -- 4:50pm up 7 days 4:58, 3 users, load average: 0.21, 0.34, 0.50 powered by OpenSuse 10.2 - registered Linux user 412217 http://norwichlinuxusersgroup.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Are you speaking of /dev/hdc (my dvd player)? If so, the same user that owns all /dev : root, of course
who are you signed in as when trying to access the drive?
It doesn't matter. It doesn't work in root or any user.

The problem is bigger than that.

I think it has to do with ivman but I can't find much info on it. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
I think I'm zeroing in on the problem (I hope). A "lshal" shows all devices including the dvd drive /dev/hdc AND the 3.5GB data dvd that is in it. "lshal -m" will toggle from true to false when the media is ejected, but none of this is picked up by KDE or the OS. Here, I think, is the meat: # /usr/bin/ivman -d --nofork & [1] 10846 fred@main:~> manager.c:1370 (do_startup_configure) Directory /home/fred/.ivman/ will be used for configuration files. manager.c:1224 (setupHAL) Will run through properties for every device currently attached manager.c:1231 (setupHAL) Will run through actions for every device currently attached IvmConfig/IvmConfigCommon.c:166 (ivm_device_is_mountable) UDI /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_part_1_size_3880845312 is device /dev/hdc IvmConfig/IvmConfigCommon.c:332 (ivm_device_is_mountable) Device /dev/hdc appears to be mountable manager.c:1001 (ivm_media_changed) Attempting to mount device /dev/hdc manager.c:773 (ivm_run_command) Running: halmount '/dev/hdc' /dev/hdc not found manager.c:1017 (ivm_media_changed) /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_part_1_size_3880845312 wasn't mounted, by us or by others... Hey, it works, especially for testing. Not having access to another 10.2 box (my mom is 80 miles away and on a dialup), I don't have anything to compare with. Here are a couple of more pieces to the puzzle: All this time I have been trying to get the Suse 10.2 data data DVD to auto mount. I put a Duke Nukem cd in and presto, it mounted and a window popped up asking what I wanted to do. I got to see all the activity in the lshal debug window... I pulled the cd and tried a different data dvd, same problem. I tried "halmount /dev/hdc /media/dvd", got a "/dev/hdc not found". I tried "mount /dev/hdc /media/dvd" again, just to verify the manual mount was still working and it was. Manual dvd mount works, halmount doesn't. I verified that kde's storage media settings were correct. So, what keeps the dvd from automounting? I think it has to do with ivman but I can't find much info on it. Mine is still working OK. I just checked permissions on /dev/dvdrecorder and dvd, they are lrwxrwxrwx and /media/dvdrecorder drwxr-xr-x.
