I'd like opinions on the ATI RADEON 8500LE if anyone is using this card or something close to it. Does it work well with XFree86 4.2.0? Is it worth the $126.00? I'm getting damn sick of nVidia's crappy configs and temperment. Thanks for any info. -=Ben --=====-----=====-- mailto:ben@whack.org --=====-- Tell me what you believe..I tell you what you should see. -DP --=====-----=====--
For 2D stuff it is great... in fact, i dare say the the screen movements and redraw seems quite snappy compared to a simliarly config'd box with a GeForce4. BUT... if you want/need 3D, then you'll have to wait a while as the 8500 (AFAIK) is not supported by xf86_glx yet. On the other hand, the 7500 isn't too bad and does have 3D support (it plays Quake quite nicely at 1280 x 1024) - Herman Ben Rosenberg wrote:

Is there an ATI card that will do 3D and dual head on SuSE 8.0 ? Mike On Thursday 08 August 2002 03:50, Herman Knief wrote:

================ Ben, I have customer's running them with SuSE and 4.2 handles it very nicely. I think you might be able to use that FireGL software with it as well, to really wring out good 3d. You can probably find more over on the XFree86 site about that. I have been on their mail list for about a week now and following some mails about the FireGL on the 8500. nvidia GeForce4 Ti 4600 what's the best way to get it to work with Suse8.. the nvidia logo appears proudly at bootup. But the color seems not up to snuff. Any good places to read up on installing this card optimally? In advance, thanks... Coop
Run a 3Ddiag and send back the results... (privately is fine, until a solution is found which can be posted back to the list.) - Herman Coop wrote:

Well i have its earlier brother - 8500 on one of machines here, and its absolutely cool. I am thinking about ditching Nvidia Ti from another box in favor of 8500LE pros:- its flipping fast with 2D, it has way better font rendering( which is important for me since i am staring at bloody screen pretty much all day long) that any NVidia card ever had. Colors and overall rendering with high resolutions - is just best. ATI was always leader there. cons: as of now - cost. some goofiness with ALI chipset motherboards (mostly fixed i think by now by most bios updates). -- as of 3D - i dont really care much about that bit, but if i recall correctly XiG graphics has benchmarks for their X server where 8500 beats most of latest NVidia cards in OpenGL runs. And 8500 actually runs nicely with XFree4.2 (unlike someone tried to tell before). So basically if you up to getting solid card with good perfomance and good rendering - thats the one. (not to mention it never will fall in same lovely issue with Sound Blaster 5.1 as NVidia's 8)). Cheers, Sergei

In the installation I've tried I've found opengl for ATI 8500 to be incredibly buggy.
And 8500 actually runs nicely with XFree4.2 (unlike someone tried to tell before).
The Xvideo stuff isn't finished. Things like overlay only barely works. Don't expect good performance with DVD movies. //Anders -- `When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, `it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less.'

I've heard good things about the 7500, but I've never tried. I think you should be good with that one though.

Normally I watch it on a regular TV (only 28" :() but it's good to be able to watch it on a comp too. Sometimes it can help clear your mind when you're stuck on a problem, and you don't have a 36" tv in the office, right? :) It's also good when you're on a long train journey, although the batteries doesn't last nearly as long as I'd want (I wonder how the transmeta is doing, hm) //Anders -- `When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, `it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less.'

Ben, I am considering a move to ATI as well for my next laptop. The mobile 7500 started shipping last December. If you wouldn't mind, can you post your results back here, especially 3D to help me make up my mind. Best Regards, Keith -- LPIC-2, MCSE, N+ Right behind you, I see the millions Got spam? Eh? I was talking about decent openGL implementation, i.e XiG's X server.. 8) Workstation series X server works quite nicely. It wouldnt do fancy private extensions from mesaGL, but its running all core OpenGL things - Quake3 would be example of those .

Well. Life is never fair. Btw - same XiG chaps have their own video player that does nice job on overlays. 8) Cheers, Sergei

Hey Ben, Check www.pricewatch.com... You can find the Radeon 7500s with 64 MB DDR for around the $60 range. =- Herman Ben Rosenberg wrote:

Hi ya Ben & All, I've got an ancient Radeon 7000 & the DVD play back rocks (industry standard, blah, blah....), because of the onboard MPEG-2 decoder. Later models have this feature too. My next card will be a 7500 All In Wonder (AIW), so I can DVD & TV & better 3D. *8500 AIW, with 128megz DDR-DROOL-MMM* IMHO, the 2D is better than Nvidia, but my ancient beastie is no so good @ 3D. *BFN* & enjoy the WAY better prices you guys get up North of New Zealand. ;-) Greek Geek :-) Unix will self-destruct in five seconds... 4... 3... 2... 1... The ATI Radeon 7500 64M DDR card works like a charm. I just fired up SaX2 and it detected it first time out and setup DRI and GLX. This card is about 3X-4X faster then the Diamond Viper 770 it replaced. If anyone has any fears about using this card...don't. Just spend the $65 and you'll never regret it. Cheers! -=Ben --=====-----=====-- mailto:ben@whack.org --=====-- Tell me what you believe..I tell you what you should see. -DP --=====-----=====--
Hi Ben, thanx for that heads up :-) Now, if only that job interview I went for this afternoon comes thru (fingers crossed), I will buy SuSE 8.0 & of course an Radeon 7500 AIW. *BFN* H :-) "The Israeli Palestine dispute is a short term problem" - Dr Craig Barrett, Intel.
