It seems like every release of SuSE that I buy, I end up with one disk that reads erratically. With 9.0 Pro it's disk 4. The first thing I do with a new distro is to put the CDs into jewel cases. Every so often I see an ad for a CD cleaning/polishing machine --I think it's cranked by hand--but I don't know where I've seen it. Try Google, or possibly a CD or DVD store. Even Radio Shack might sell one. If you Google, try "CD scratch remover". --doug At 01:16 PM 5/4/2004 -0700, Jim Sabatke wrote:

well... i´ve already used white teethpaste (no mentol) with some sucess... you have to first make a thin camade (i guess is that the rigth word...) and wait it to get dry, and after that, polish the disc, VERY smoothly it had worked to me all the 5 or 6 times i´ve had to remove LIGTH scratches from my disks

Hi Jim, I doubt that the CDs are the real problem... maybe you need a new CD-ROM drive? But nevertheless... using furniture-polish helped me to "re-enable" a lot of CDs with many deep scratches. Oliver Kellermann

It may or may not help now, but some CD copying programs will recover damaged CD's if you are lucky. I have more experience of this on Windows and if you have access to windows I think WinISO may help. You could try mkisofs under SuSE, with some work the least you could do is assemble a CD that has all the intact files on it, so that you can cleanly install them.
I copy my distro the minute I get it and use the copies. That way I can throw them about and not worry too much, just make a new copy if it fails. If the distro CD is dodgy from the start this could help to make a reliable copy (I find that the severity of the problem varies from drive to drive, depending on things like how old they are). Also a quick clean-up of the drive can help sometimes with marginal disks.

This may sound gross, but I've had luck spitting on them and polishing with a soft cloth. I can see scratches if I hold it up right to the light. I think the packaging in cardboard is not the best way to store disks. Yeah, I know jewel cases are expensive though.
