Typically, I boot up suse 8.1 using the graphical X login interface, but occasionally, like when X fails to load over and over again, it would be useful to specify booting up in text mode. Is there a boot parameter which allows me to override the default graphical login? Regards, Hagen Finley

There's no need to override the graphical login. If X fails to start, simply press Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get to the first of six virtual (text) consoles, where you can login in text mode. Use Alt-Fn (n=1-6) to select among the virtual consoles. Jim

I've got a reason - Viewsonic A50 monitor (15") doesn't show up in the monitor list during install. Now, upon reboot, it tries to load the graphical login and immediately sends the monitor into "Frequency over-range" mode, thus freaking out the KVM. I can usually get around it by bouncing to another virtual console, but I have to power cycle the KVM. Every time I power cycle the KVM, the stupid Windows 2000 Server then forgets that the mouse is attached. heh. So yes, if there's an easy way to kill the graphical login altogether, I'd love to hear it. If it's been mentioned already, I apologize - I missed it. Been slow with catching up on email... Thanks, and happy new year to y'all! -Jonathan

So shutdown KDM for a bit and change the horizontal and vertical refresh rates so they match what your monitor can do. Once this is done ..it won't matter if it's listed or not. You can override whatever the settings are. My monitor is a 21's Sun Monitor that's made by Sony. It's not listed either but I plugin the correct values and it works like a charm. :) -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe.. Heh,heh, another convert to init 3. :-) Yeah, the way to boot to console login is: Go into yast2( it's easier to find it with the X version of yast2), go to Runlevel Editor Set Default runlevel after booting = 3 Multiuser with Network. As far as I'm concerned, runlevel 3 is where the real action is. X is just window dressing. -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation
Another way, start a shell either by logging into a console window or under X and become root. Then edit /etc/inittab, of course you really should use the king of editors - vi - ; ) GRIN Look for: # The default runlevel is defined here id:5:initdefault: Change to id:3:initdefault: Save file and reboot. And you are done! Who needs Yast when you know where the files are! I do this for some of my systems that I don't want the overhead of X unless I start it by hand with startx. Abraham zentara wrote:

Hi In boot-prompt write "linux 3". In my 8.0 installation with lilo it gives the "linux"-part already, so I need to punch in "3" and press enter. Level 3 is full operating level, but without graphics. Ofcourse You can run graphics too by issuing command "startx". Jaska. Viestissä Sunnuntai 29. Joulukuuta 2002 08:07, Hagen Finley kirjoitti:
