Hi. I use Suse 7.0 on a desktop PC with an ISA non PnP SoundBlaster 16. Kernel has been upgraded to 2.4.2. As reported by 'dmesg', SB resources are correct and there is sound. Port, irq and dma are informed by kernel parameters in '/etc/lilo.conf' (append line). I don't use Alsa drivers. Before 2.4.2, or booting now with a 2.2.16 kernel, 'cat /dev/sndstat' reported sound devices, but booting with 2.4.2 I get "no such device". This test is mentioned in the old SOUND-HOWTO. On a laptop with 7.0 and kernel 2.4.2, having an ESS Maestro 2E sound chip, 'cat /dev/andstat' also gives "no such device", but it uses Alsa drivers, and 'cat /proc/asound/sndstat' gives moreless what 'cat /dev/sndstat' reported before. Am I missing something so that 'cat /dev/andstat' returns "no such device" with kernel 2.4.2? Which is the appropiate substitute for checking sound devices WITHOUT Alsa drivers? (See that sound works, but if not, 'cat /dev/andstat' would be useless for debugging). TIA, Webillo.
