SSL connecton on news reader.
Does anybody know ANY news reader that runs on Mac OS X, Linux, or Windoze that supports SSL connections to a SSL port at the news server? I have tried Pan, Knode and XanaNews (on Windoze). XanaNews does not appear to work on either port? john -- ############################################# # John N. AFAIK slrn, Gnus or you can use stunnel: http://stunnel.mirt.net/ with leafnode: http://leafnode.sourceforge.net/doc_de/FAQ.html then you can use any client. Charles -- How do I type "for i in *.dvi do xdvi i done" in a GUI? (Discussion in comp.os.linux.misc on the intuitiveness of interfaces.)

Hmm, if you set up an ssh tunnel with port forwarding, with the server's news port (nntps, port 563) connected to a local port (e.g. nntp, 119), and you connect with your news client to localhost:119, wouldn't that work? Try man ssh, or try kssh. Cheers, Leen

Could I ask you to elaborate for a dummy? My newserver port 563 is SSL. Am I wrong in just thinking that I can find a newsreader that suppots SSL and set the connection port in that newsreader to 563 and have an SSL connection to and from the newsreader? john -- ############################################# # John N. Ok, I'll try to explain this, although I never have done this myself (I would love to play with this for a short time). Port forwarding can only done by root, so you need to become root first. The command to execute is like: ssh -L local_port:remote_host:remote_port login_name@remote_host The local_port can be anything you like, let's take port 119 (nntp port). The remote_port has to be 563 (nntps port) for an obvious reason. ;) The remote_host is your newsserver, let's call that example.com. And you can't become root at the remote_host, so we use john.do as login_name on the remote_host: ssh -L 119:nntp.example.com:563 john.do@nntp.example.com If all is well, the ssh tunnel is setup. Now take your newsreader that you usually use (different console, perhaps X11), and tell it to connect to the newsserver localhost port 119. Yes! localhost:119 That's all. I suppose you can as well use kssh for this, KDE's graphical ssh client. There is a catch: I was not able to test this. So I hope my directions were good. If not, tell it here in a reply, and I'm sure somebody else with experience in port forwarding will tell you what you have to do. ;) Cheers, Leen

Leendert has elaborated for you in another mail... But this situation is a good example of how many things in *nix systems work. Rather than building in SSL to a news reader (and a mail client and chat client etc...) we use a two separate programs 'bolted together'. What he suggests for port forwarding of the news client can be used for forwarding almost any port. -- GPG fingerprint = 3D45 5509 D380 26A4 523E A9D8 A66A 5F38 CA43 BB0E
