[opensuse] WARNING - "I'll see you, and raise you the next coolest KDE 44 tip & trick - Full Acces to Apps in DT Context Menu"
Listmates, KDE44 has made great progress in the desktop context area. In kde3 one of the things I liked the most was the ability to assign my the right mouse click on the desktop to a custom launcher. You could define multiple custom launchers and switch depending on the task at hand. (graphics, web dev, document prep, etc...) KDE44 has finally added a good part of that capability back. So far, you only get that ability to add the whole suse menu to a mouse button which isn't as good as having the ability to add just the 8-10 favorite apps to a couple of launchers, but it is a great step forward. I reassign the standard menu to the middle-mouse click on the desktop and assign the application launcher to the right mouse button so use is consistent with just about every other DT out there (icewm, blackbox, fluxbox, openbox, enlightenment, windowmaker, etc..). You will find this option in Desktop Activity Settings (i.e. rt-click the desktop), the choose 'Mouse Actions'. You can then assign what happens when you click the left, right and middle mouse buttons on the desktop. By default, 'paste' is set for the middle mouse button -> get rid of it. From what I can tell, the only thing it is good for is pasting text into the little stickies. For everything else, you are middle clicking in a 'window' and that continues to work no matter what this setting is set to. So I set the Middle-Button to 'Standard Menu' to free up the Right-Button for the 'Application Launcher'. Then just click Apply and go click on your desktop. I'll wager you will be pleasantly surprised. See: http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/dt/kde4/ss/K4-rt-click-menu.jpg -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
