I'll wait until you all guys use it (for a couple of weeks) and based on your reactions then I'll decide wheter to buy it or not. :p Jorge

I confess, it seems rather a short period of time since 9.1 arrived, and now here's 9.2. Yet and still, I'd like to move up, and I'm not afraid of the cutting edge. After all, if you've ever used Windows, you just get used to things not working right. ;) Hopefully, that's not the case with 9.2. Even so, I found that setting up USB printers in SUSE was much, much easier than on my Win98 box. In fact, the printer setup was one of the things that convinced me to put more effort into SUSE. Proprietary, time-bomb CD burner software was another. You make a good point.. and I'm not afraid of the bleeding edge, having done beta testing for years. I gave that up, though, finally. I just wish I *could* burn a CD w/o going back to XP. K3b doesn't find the burner ...nor does xcdroast. Flawless burning from XP. I have learned the hard way to always keep a 'Doze box handy ...and it is unfortunate that this seems to be necessary. -- "Yogi" CH Namasté Yoga Studio

Check your setup. k3b works fine. xcdroast as well, with less comfort though. If you do not have a non standard and exotic burner, then your setup is probably messed up somewhere. I always jumped on the new and latest versions, even updating frequently the kernel with a kotd. It always gave me more functionality. And I had to learn something, which I'm not afraid of. Can't wait to get 9.2 !!!!! Regards, Matt

K3b loads, won't burn. Xcdroast won't go beyond the attempt to recognize the drive before locking up & having to be killed: pg0: Autoprobe failed pg: No ATAPI device detected == pg0: Autoprobe failed pg: No ATAPI device detected Device 0b:00 not ready. == pg0: Autoprobe failed pg: No ATAPI device detected sr0: CDROM not ready. Make sure there is a disc in the drive. ...are the various errors I get when I try to access the drive. MPlayer, however, will play a DVD ...and I can otherwise browse CDRs w/o any problem. The installation I did which encompassed the entire HD burned CDs, but locked up on every 2nd or 3rd boot ...just prior to init 5; I reinstalled on half the drive and now I cannot burn a thing. I have made no adjustments to the CD-RW/DVD-R drive. I'm puzzled, frankly. -- "Yogi" CH Namasté Yoga Studio

Not on my system. 9.1 with the latest kernel updates. I cannot burn CD's! Every burning program eats up all my memory (512) and the swap (1012). The burning stops after 50% or 75%. It used to work but after a kernel update ( months ago now) I faced this problem. Hope that 9.2 will rectify this. -- The vast majority of our imports come from outside the country." - George W. Bill, hopefully things will work out on 9.2. I did a FTP install of 9.1 a few weeks back and my burner works just fine. It's a Memorex 52x32x52 IDE internal drive, which also works just fine with Win98, Debian and SuSE 9.1. There were some changes that occurred between the 2.4 and 2.6 series kernels that might affect you. In 2.4 you normally used the scsi emulation for you're burner, and in 2.6 this was eliminated. (although still an option, and debated alot within certain groups) If nothing else, backdown to the previous kernel, OR just roll you're own kernel and experiment. Dana

I was planning on doing an FTP install of 9.1 because when I do it that way (and get all the updates via the installation process) I have usually not had the problems I experience when updating an existing installation via YaST. -- "Yogi" CH Namasté Yoga Studio

Oh. I'm sure it has nothing to do with my drive, it all worked perfect before I updated the kernel. AAMOF Andrew Morton acknowledge in a kernel update that some people had problem as I had ( have). He also said it was fixed but.............

I'm on track to buy a new computer. I'm thinking of buying a iMac, what might solve a lot of problems I have with multimedia on SUSE. -- The vast majority of our imports come from outside the country." - George W. Hi Yogi, do you mind if I butt in here? I'm using xcdroast in linux (9.1 and I had it under 8.2). So is this a hardware issue, or is it how arcane xcdroast can be? Mike

Don't mind at all. I hesitate to think that it is hardware since this drive was replaced one month ago ...and has worked. Maybe it is the arcane nature of xcdroast. <LOL> -- "Yogi" CH Namasté Yoga Studio

With the 2.4 kernels it was necessary to use ide-scsi. Do you have "hdc=ide-scsi" (or whatever your burner is) as a boot parameter?

OK, I guess from the kernel version that you're using 9.0 (why haven't you updated? -99 is old), and I remember a bug in 9.0 that concerned resmgr. To check if that's the problem, open a console, su to root and run "resmgr login <your username> :0", then start k3b as your regular user and see if it detects your burner

Yep... the xcdroaster came up & immediately reported success on the scan. So... I guess I have to execute that command whenever I want to burn, which is a damned sight better than not being able to burn at all. Thanks! :-) -- "Yogi" CH Namasté Yoga Studio
