[SLE] Reiser FS problem reported on front page of rpmfind!
On the software front I am using the journalling filesystem Ext3 . The machine rebooted 3/31/2000 after 129 days of uptime, so yes Ext3 is reliable ! However the reboot occured less than 2 days after I switched
The following was clipped from the front page of rpmfind.net: the drives (Maxtors) hoocked to the Promise33 IDE board from polling to DMA mode in an attempt to decrease the CPU load. Seems the IDE code still has stability problems under high loads, disabling all DMA transfers seems to cure those at the expense of more CPU usage ... too bad. I provide kernel rpms including Ext3<< I have BCC'ed both support@suse.com and @suse.de so they can be aware of this. (And not get a bezillion(sp) emails from the list). Hope they work with the person who posted this so the problem can be fixed. You may have noticed that they're talking about ext3, not reiserfs. Michael, Thanks for clearing that up for me. I guess I should have done more research. I didn't realize there were two "juornalling" file systems in the works. I have a good ideas what is meant by a journalling FS, and understand its importantce, but beyond that, I haven't been able to keep up with it. There are even more. For example, SGI is planning to make their 64-bit xfs filesystem available to the Linux community later this year (I heard that at a recent SGI workshop here on campus, but also see http://oss.sgi.com/projects/xfs/ ). Is that something SuSE will implement when it comes out?
