Is anyone currently using Webmin for anything in a production/mission critical environment? If so, what has your experience been and would you recommend the product? Thanks

I have used it extensively and recommend it anyone. If you are using SuSE 9.3 it is not yet available but should be soon. I does ease the pain of configuring some components that don't come with a gui. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge

I am using 1.200 from www.webmin.com on 9.3 (the noarch rpm). I have used it for years for partitioning, setting cron jobs, etc.--almost anything a linux system can do. Ed Harrison, Registered Linux User #199533 SuSE 9.3, Kernel 2.6.11 PolarBar Mailer 1.25a

When I try to install it I get the following error: Preparing... ########################################### [100%] Unable to identify operating system error: %pre(webmin-1.200-1) scriptlet failed, exit status 2 error: install: %pre scriptlet failed (2), skipping webmin-1.200-1 Did you modify the rpm somehow? No modification. When I start webmin in Firefox, it says it is 1.2000, running on SuSE 9.2. I never noticed that before until the comment from Mike Cooke: "You can install from tarball on 9.3 - just tell it that you're running 9.2 - works fine. And to the OP - I've been using it for a year or so too, works perfectly." For some reason, the rpm thought it was on a 9.2 system. I got the very same error so I would be interested in how you got it to install also jack

Check the archives, I explained how to do so. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge

Installed Webmin 1.200 rpm as follows: rpm -Uvh --nopre --nopost webmin-1.200-1.noarch.rpm cd /usr/libexec/webmin vi os_list.txt locate the line for SuSE 9.2 and copy to another line and modify new line to point to 9.3 (hint, while on the line for 9.2 hit yy then p) run ./setup.sh answer the prompts. If you want to run as a secure web site install the SSLeay packages prior to running the script and then you should be good to go. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge

I installed from the tarball... and it's up and running but I am not seeing the usual plethora of things to play with. (like mysql for example) It seems pretty brain dead compare to what it normally (on older systems) shows. How does the rpm install look?

Yes version 1.17 and 1.20 on SuSE Pro 9.2 (different systems even!). I've had the best results getting the RPM from www.Webmin.com and installing it. In the past the version included with SuSE didn't work right if at all. Even Webmin.com recommended downloading their version versus what SuSE packaged. Still a habit with me. Don't know if the included version has been fixed or not... Manually check the configuration of each module you are using to make sure it matches the SuSE scheme. If you use YaST as well as Webmin to administer your system you should carefully check the config files produced to make sure it is what you want. Especially if you use both Yast and Webmin on the same service/server/module. For example: if you use dhcpd and use both YaST and Webmin to config it, double check the changes they both produce to make sure it is what you want. They don't always make the same changes in the same manner that you want. Once you know the idiosyncracies you're good to go. YaST is great for YOU of course. Choose your weapon? Pick your poison? I recommend it all the time as it consolidates a ton of servers/services/modules. If YaST and Webmin could be tested to verify they produce the same quality output I'd be a very happy camper. Maybe I'm missing something about SuSE and Webmin integration that someone here will enlighten me with their knowledge. :) Stan
