I have a workstation running SUSE 9.2. I want to access its desktop remotely from a Windows XP machine. can anybody tell me how to do this ? Previously, I tried the following approach: 1. on SUSE 9.2 workstation: vncserver :1 2. on WindowsXP: downloaded tightvnc connect to <hostname>:2 but it didn't work out. thanks in advance ! --Long

wouldn't you want to connect to the same server that you started? <hostname>:1 not <hostname>:2? B-) On Monday 28 March 2005 09:46 pm, Long Fei wrote:

Can you access it from the same linux client? This should tell you if it is the server or the client. You NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED to make sure you use the same client that linux is using. (e.g. get tightvnc from the CD/DVD that your distro came on) B-) On Tuesday 29 March 2005 07:18 am, Long Fei wrote:

SUSE 9.2 has a feature called "remote administration" (in YaST/Network Services). It will configure vncserver for you, and it will do it right.
2. on WindowsXP: downloaded tightvnc connect to <hostname>:2
It should work with tightvnc. VNCs don't have to be the same version, they will negotiate the best protocol they both know.

I access my M$ box almost exclusively through VNC. With my aversion to M$, I use the thing as little as possible. I have DEFINITELY run into problems mixing versions. There are mouse issues mostly. It IS a problem. For the little time it takes to match versions, you are avoiding potential problems. Worth the piece of mind. B-) On Wednesday 30 March 2005 06:32 am, Silviu Marin-Caea wrote:

The tightvnc package for Windows is on the SuSe CD/DVD under dosutils. PaulH -- Paul Hewlett (Linux #359543) Tel: +27 21 852 8812 Cel: +27 72 719 2725 Fax: +27 86 672 0563 --
