[opensuse] Firefox 3.X 100% CPU usage makes it unusable - urgent fix required
Hi all, Can someone assist me to sort out a 100% CPU usage by FireFox. It happens with all 3.X versions. FF is unusable at the moment. I have searched and see that it has been a problem in most FF versions and Linux. I need an urgent fix. Our ERPII system uses Web Browsers (Web 2.0 & LAMP). The Windows users with M$IE have no problems, but it is banned in our company. System: OpenSUSE 10.3 Linux ~ 2.6.22.19-0.1-default #1 SMP 2008-10-14 22:17:43 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux FireFox: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.0.5) Gecko/2008121300 SUSE/3.0.5-2.3 Firefox/3.0.5 TIA :-( Al -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Might it be a javascript problem? I know your web2 stuff will be all javascript, but try disabling it and see what happens to the CPU-usage. Or just go browse a public page without javascript. /Per -- /Per Jessen, Zürich -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I've had such problems but they were caused by the flash plugin. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Your report misses quite a bit of technical information. The only really known thing is that the sqlite use for history and bookmarks can slow down Firefox quite a lot (not sure if it uses 100% CPU since usually it's just IO bound). That depends also on the filesystem used for the profiles. If it turns out that is your issue you can try to improve it by setting the pref pref("toolkit.storage.synchronous", 0); So if that isn't your issue, we need for sure much more information. I do not believe Firefox is the problem, but a plug-in. My suspicion is acroread using nspluginwrapper (since I see you are using x86_64. I have seen that cause 100% and massive memory leak. That problem was so bad I have changed mine to open pdfs with Kpdf instead of Acrobat Reader (for both Thunderbird and Firefox, though it was mostly the plug-in causing the problems. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 10.3 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Per, jdd, Hugo, Wolfgang, Joe, I thank you all for responding! OK; first I am going to test without any plug-ins to see if it improves. We will also deactivate plug-ins on the Windows machines. I will report the results shortly. Installed are: Adblock (Win & Lin), Beagle Indexer (was deactivated in Lin, not installed in Win), Deutsches Woerterbuch (Win & Lin), FoxStox (Lin), NoScript (Win & Lin), Print Context Menu (Lin) [Win=XP & Vista & Lin=OpenSUSE 10.3] TIA :-) Al -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I had that problem and as already mentioned it was with the adobe acrobat or flash plugin. When it happens I just used ps -elf | grep acro or ps -elf | grep adobe and then killed the offending process. I finally set my default pdf viewer to kpdf and the problem went away. I like the text/graphic selection better in kpdf anyway. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. It is called "okular" in KDE4. Ciao, Marcus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Of course, users really shouldn't have to think about that. If it's really a drop-in replacement it should "Provides" kpdf so that "zypper in kpdf" pulls it in. Also, opening a PDF is such a common computing task that it should be installed (and associated with PDFs) whenever the user chooses the KDE 4 desktop. Advanced users should expect so update their working knowledge of the system, though.

Widget? Really? That's been around a /long/ time. At least since Java 1.1, probably much longer. (I wouldn't be surprised if NeXT gave it it's programming meaning.) http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/widget says it has been around in some form since 1924. -- Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. ,= ,-_-. =. bss@iguanasuicide.net ((_/)o o(\_)) ICQ: 514984 YM/AIM: DaTwinkDaddy `-'(. .)`-' http://iguanasuicide.net/ \_/

I'm using 32 bit 11.0/KDE3 without eye candy on a 3.4G Cedar Mill P4 (Hyperthreading) with 4G RAM, Intel G31 video. With 2 Youtube tabs, http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0110684/ and tabs for 5 of the people in that movie's images pages, top shows FF using 400M virt & 130-140% CPU, with overall CPU between 60-70%. I have installed flash-player and various goodies like libdvdcss & vlc from the non-default repos. It takes FF a ridiculous time just to switch tabs. -- "Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it." Proverbs 22:6 NIV Team OS/2 ** Reg.
