RE: [SLE] Pentium optimized Kernel safe for Athlon?
I had a similar problem running a K6-2 450 on a SSocket7 Mobo. I had to reside to the fact that I couldn't use the 450 and used a 400 with no problems. I got it down to a heating problem of some sort. Try slowing your Athlon down and see what happens. I'm not suggesting a permanent fix, just to rule out a few possibilities. What is the exact spec of your machine? What bus speed are you running it at and how fast is your memory? Have you tried a BIOS upgrade? Kev -----Original Message----- From: Raymond C. As suggested, I downloaded the memtest86 program and ran it overnight - 9 hours straight with no errors. I think my memory is OK. My system has locked up twice more now, both times during the ld stage of compiling using make, and this time from the bash shell. It doesn't lock up every time, however. I successfully recompiled and linked the same code three or four times before the system locked up. This is very disturbing, since I put this machine together as a development machine! I can't afford to reboot running fsck every 20 minutes or so while I am working! Ray ----- Original Message ----- From: BobF <FBob@wt.net> To: Raymond C. Hello all, I have been experiencing some random lockups on my newly built Athlon

My machine has locked up (and I mean locked up) when a: shutting down b: running some opengl stuff c: running Netscape (consistent) d: running make from inside emacs - locks when ld runs. (this
happended a couple of times in a row. Hasn't happened yet when running make from bash)
One time, I had to manually run fsck to correct some errors. Another
time, after rebooting, some files seemed to have reverted to a version about an hour old. (Still not quite sure how that happened. Surely, the disk caches are flushed out more often than that!)
This machine has not been really stable in either linux or win98, but
before I entirely blame the hardware, I want to eliminate the simple.
I would check memory first if it is in any way unstable with another OS. Check this out:
