[opensuse] Issues with SUDO and washed out fonts
Hello all, I recently switched from using Ubuntu Linux to OpenSuse 11.0 (x86-64) because OpenSuse 11.0 has better Mono support and as I read on the internet Yast and zypper are much better compared to previous releases. But there are a few things that keep "annoying" me. When using the command "sudo" I don't get any auto-completion of the application I am trying to run. For example, when using "sudo make" I could type "un" and hit the TAB key after which Ubuntu would complete the world "uninstall". This doesn't seem to work with OpenSuse. Is this a known issue/design choice/implementation choice or is it a bug? I also don't seem to be able to run "Gedit" via "sudo". When I run "sudo gedit" it gives me an application not found (or not configured, I can't exactly remember or test at the moment). This sometimes leads to some issues. For example, when I wanted to configure my nVidia graphics card using the "nvidia-settings" configuration tool I was unable to run it via "sudo" or directly as "root". Of course, as a user it was unable to save the modifications it made to the "xorg.conf" file so I had to do it manually. Is there something I can change, configuration wise, to allow sudo to execute normal desktop applications? It also seems that some fonts (especially monospace, which is one of the default fonts) are very washed out and blurry. You can see an example at http://users.telenet.be/tyfius/images/linux/os_washed_out_bold.png. The red and green look blurry, and after a few hours this really gets annoying. Black bold is even worse. I currently switched to Deja Vu Mono Book, which looks much smoother and doesn't have the bold issue. I am using a TFT, and all my font settings should be OK. They are identical to the ones I had using Ubuntu where I did not have this issue. Is this also a know issue or am I missing some configuration option? - Jensen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You need the package "bash-completion" for this, it's not installed by default in opensuse 11. I'm not using it so I don't know whether you have to make the completion sudo-aware (which shouldn't be a big deal).

With opensuse root's $PATH is rather basic (or "specific") in comparison to a user's $PATH. Makes some sense, too. I guess Ubuntu is a tad more lax there, which, on some systems, makes sense, too. You can run "sudo `which gedit`" and run into the X-Server denying access and fix that with "xhost +localhost" for the time being. Or extend root's $PATH. I'd be interested to know how people who know better do it: Given root occasionaly needs access to X. How to protect the X session and make root a happy customer at the same time?
