Oh, it does matter. What do you think happens when a process that's been swapped out, suddenly needs to run ? The kernel will try to swap it back in, but cannot because the harddisk is dead. I'm not sure if linux does much paging, but a page fault that cannot be resolved by paging in will cause trouble, I guarantee it. Okay, I stand corrected. That would certainly cause a load of trouble
