RE: [opensuse] Cannot Login to new system
-----Ursprüngliche Nachricht----- Von: Terrance Eck Gesendet: Mo. 07.03.2016 19:12 An: opensuse@opensuse.org Betreff: [opensuse] Cannot Login to new system
I installed the 64bit Leap 42.1 and when it rebooted and presented the login screen my password failed. I was able to get into the terminal mode (ALT-F1) and I could login as user and root. How can this problem be solved?
Thanks It would be good to get back using Linux -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

So just to be a bit more sure: this is a fresh install of leap on a PC or a Laptop? What does mean "my password fails". That means you login and it gets all black screen with only the cursor or you stay at the login of sddm? Did you install with "update during installation" or did you just install from DVD and wanted to update later? In case you did not update yet. Login in tty1 and su - then do zypper ref then zypper dup (provided that up to now you have only the default repos activated and provided you have a working internet connection. Once done, try to restart the whole machine and to login. Ah, i forgott, there may be a keyboard layout problem. When loging in to sddm, did you check at the left in the upper screen that the right keyboard layout is supported? If your password has y and z inside try to invert them while login in, maybe it is just this little. --- Mail & Cloud Made in Germany mit 3 GB Speicher! https://email.freenet.de/mail/Uebersicht?epid=e9900000450 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

yes

Did you install with "update during installation" or did you just install from DVD and wanted to update later? This is an option I was not aware of at the time of installation.
In case you did not update yet. I will try the following commands: zypper ref zypper dup Once done, try to restart the whole machine and to login. Ah, i forgott, there may be a keyboard layout problem. If your password has y and z inside try to invert them while login in, maybe it is just this little. I don't think it is a keyboard layout problem but the password does include the letter "z" so I'll give it a try.

One bit of new information. If I enter the wrong password the screen flashes and returns with something like "password failed". If I enter the correct password the screen returns with the notation of wrong password.

I will try the following commands: zypper ref zypper dup The last zypper command resulted in: Loading repository data ... Reading installed packages ... Computing distribution upgrade ... Nothing to do. Once done, try to restart the whole machine and to login. Made no difference in the login screen Ah, i forgott, there may be a keyboard layout problem. When loging in to sddm, did you check at the left in the upper screen that the right keyboard layout is supported? If your password has y and z inside try to invert them while login in, maybe it is just this little. I don't think it is a keyboard layout problem but the password does include the letter "z" so I'll give it a try. Login with replacing z with y resulted in the login screen displaying "Failed password"
Thanks for the info

This is exactly ewhat I saw on Leap 42.1 in the beginning. AH! So that means you ARE successfully logging in, then promptly getting logged out. Something is wrong with your start-up script somewhere. What DM are you using? Could there be a clue in .xsession-errors?

Pending a proper solution, try logging in on a vtty and starting a session with startx. For that to work you may need to run as root 'chmod 4711 /usr/bin/Xorg' first. A crash instead of clean exit may mean John's right about needing a proprietary video driver. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Hold down the delete key before you enter the password, just in case there is some non-displaying character in the password field. Try to select the entire field and hit backspace. Then enter the password. Double check your CapsLock key. If it still logs in correctly in a terminal, you can rest assured that the password is correct. However, I'm still guessing its a nvidia driver, which is crashing when you try to try to log in. On a new machine, with a late model Nvidia card you probably DO NEED the proprietary driver. -- After all is said and done, more is said than done. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
