[opensuse] Intel WiFiLink 5000 series on openSUSE 11.0
Hi everyone, I have an Intel WiFiLink 5100 Card in my computer, and I'd like to make use of it under openSUSE 11.0. Support for the iwl 5000 series has been added beginning with 2.6.26 kernel only, but OS 11.0 still uses the 2.6.18 kernel. Is there an easy way to get my Intel Wifi card running? Updating to the current 2.6.27.7 kernel brought me into trouble with my ATI HD 3650 video card where I would first need to find and install a new matching propriety kernel module, as the available rpm is also only for the 2.6.18 kernel. So I look for an easier way as a shortcut. I found hints about running the iwlwifi driver on older kernels under http://intellinuxwireless.org , but it seems that the released drivers there are too old for the new 5000 series (the drivers are dated Feb 2008, and only state the Intel 4965 card). Does anyone has some experience with the iwl 5000 card? Best regards, Thomas -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You might try http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/driver:/wireless/openSUSE_11.0/noa... and see if it will help. I have no experience with the card myself. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 10.3 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I got mine to work using a fedora iwl5000-ucode firmware package since I could not find a SuSE one. I also used a 2.6.27 kernel which I got from webpin (factory) http://packages.opensuse-community.org/ I would like to add a repository through Yast for the kernel rpm and rpm's for the other hardware but I have not figured out if that's possible yet. The wifi works well, but I have not yet been able to get the webcam, etc working. Good luck. thanks for your hints. I got my intel wifi 5100 card running with the 2.6.27 kernel now - with the disadvantage that my ATI graphics card doesn't run out of the box any more. Too bad that I have to recompile the kernel module for my ATI card. This is part of the proprietary driver from ATI/AMD. Although there is a SUSE maintainer who maintains an .rpm-package for the ATI graphics drivers, the .rpm is only available for the 2.6.25 kernel used by OS 11.0. :( And the proprietary linux package provided by ATI is not at all something that can be used straightforward and seamless to add on OS 11.0. It takes some time to get the new kernel module compiled out of that bunch of files.
