[S.u.S.E. Linux] Netscape Offline: Continued

I briught up this topic on the list awhile ago. I have since learned that deleting the ~/.netscape dir and rerunning netscape to regen all the files solves (part) of the problem. I can now compose _new_ messages while offline. However, attempting to _reply_ to an existing message still causes a hang. When that happens, the following message continues to scroll on the xterm that I launched netscape from, until I kill Netscape: "Warning: Select Failed; error code 9" Does anyone have any idea what this means? no idea. I still belive netscape tries some requests. In my case, usually dial on demand ISDN is started. I can see nameserver requests etc. in messages. a workaround could be to use a caching nameserver (i start with -q option to log requested ip's in messages) and see what happens. next thing in case the upper is true, enter all (mailhost, goodness knows what else) hosts in /etc/hosts. good luck. the other advice is to use netscape 3.x, -unfortunately without mail filters- I did this as long until i silenced my system with useless phonecalls. jurgen -- ========================================== __ _ Jürgen Braukmann e-mail: brauki@cww.de | / / (_)__ __ ____ __ Tel: 0201-743648 dk4jb@db0qs.#nrw.deu.eu | / /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ========================================== /____/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

Juergen, I don't recall seeing the -q option documented, but you can bet I'm going to give it a try. What puzzles me is why I can open a "New Msg" window without a hang, but "Reply" hangs. BTW, where does the -q option log to? Upps. Little misunderstanding. -q refers to the named (caching only) named will write adresses and ip's requested in /var/log/messages. I suppose netscape is doing DNS requests. if your nameserver is not reacheable (offline) netscape might wait forever. (or it's checking anything else not there for the same reason) You hopefully can figure this out by installing a caching only nameserver. Requests should be logged in messages (see above). I used Netscape 3.x for similar resons quite a while unti I finally managed to keep it quiet. .procmailrc did all the mail sorting. but mozilla 4.x is still much more fun. You made that clear about named, if I'd just stopped to read more carefully. I think you're absolutely right about the hangs coming from DNS access. I don't know why Netscape would want to access the DNS system during the writing of a message, as opposed to actually sending it. That would explain why I can open the "New Msg" dialog without a hang...there's no address in the "To:" field to resolve, whereas in a "Reply" the address is already there. As a kludge I'm going to put the SuSE list name and IP address, plus a couple of others I use a lot, into the /etc/hosts file. Then I may look at named. Meanwhile I've got Mutt running and I'll give it a new look. Regards and thanks again.
