The printing costs of the manual alone must be quite high.
I concur -- while the quality of the manuals keep getting better and better, they are basically repeating things already said in the two foot tall and growing stack of installation manuals I already own -- with only very, very slight changes as the OS evolves. What people who have been using Linux for years need is an electronically searchable version of the changes -- not more dead trees to pile up on their bookshelves. SuSE needs a way to make their 6 CD version available as updates to people who cannot afford to buy the professional version 4 times a year, or else they will lose touch with the origins of Linux, and wither. I disagree that the printed manual should be left out of future versions of SuSE Linux. I for one bought SuSE Linux because it was better documented than most of the other distro's. It might be better to leave the printed manual out of the upgrade version - since they already have the manual - and new users of SuSE can still get the printed manual in the full version. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

We usually announce and ship the German version first. It sometimes takes ages to get the boxes through US customs after they have been produced. Therefore we delay the announcement in the US so people do not have to wait too long after it has been announced. This is because the English version is different from the US version - stupid crypto and patent laws require us to leave off some packages from the US distribution. OK, so there are 2 English versions namely the restrictive US English and the complete UK? English version. As a Canadian who is not subject to US law how do I get a copy of the non-US English version? The only source of real SuSe Linux into Canada at this time appears to be from the US as SuSe is practically invisible in Canada. I have a database of just under 100 local retailers in my area and none of them stock SuSe and the 4 national mail order chains I have dealt with also do not carry SuSe. The Canadian companies listed at suse.com appear to be CD burners (1 or 2 CDs, no manuals). This means that to get SuSe, I and presumably other Canadians need to order from the US and now I find that this is a crippled version. Any way to get the non-US English version? Well, being a US citizen and being restricted on what I can get from SuSE, my understanding is this: the US version (a.k.a. the International version) is stripped of the "good" security packages because of the restrictions that the US had regarding crypto export. We can import all the crypto we want, but could not ship it out of the country again, even if it originated somewhere else. Now that US crypto laws have been relaxed, I would love to see a fuller version with a number of the security packages included, rather than having to download them separately from the German site. The issue for people in English speaking countries is to convince SuSE to only make one English distro and handle International shipments from somewhere outside of the US. Then, the US could have the benefit of all the crypto packages, and not be penalized for having a paranoid government.

For what it's worth, I live in Toronto and have bought SuSE for the last couple of years at the University of Toronto Book Store. Of course this is the US version (without the encryption stuff). I believe they get their copies from a US distributor. I also believe they will ship anywhere in Canada but you should check their website to be sure. Personally, I'll pass on the 7.0 version unless there are some significant advantages to upgrading. I've always bought each and every release for the last couple of years but was very disappointed in 6.4. There were too many things broken when it was shipped and some were never fixed that I'm aware of ie. susefax or sendfax. Frankly, there wasn't a compelling reason for me to upgrade and I now realize that I just wasted my $$$ on 6.4. I only wound up installing on one test system and kept my main systems running 6.3. This time I'll wait for a solid release that has the features I need before buying. Gerry On Wed, 2 Aug 2000, Arlen Carlson wrote:
