Combine ftp and torrent bandwidth (was: Ahain a new version of ma keSUSEdvd)
Ok, done. Robert said that a client that do this already exists, but my google search hasn't have any result. If this client exists we would suggest to use this client to user. Do you think is possible to ask mirror's administrator do add torrent to service they provide, this would solve eveyting. -----Original Message----- From: jdd [mailto:jdd@dodin.org] Sent: mercoledì 31 agosto 2005 16.39 To: opensuse@opensuse.org Subject: Re: [opensuse] Ahain a new version of makeSUSEdvd I think you should have opened an other thread. this one is hudge enough. in two words (in fact, a little more :-), bitorrent allows users to _share_ they own bandwith to the others. any user is also a server, so as many users as much bandwith. jdd

Well.. that's a bit illusory, unfortunately.. Or do you know a torrent daemon that is production-grade, stable, doesn't eat up much memory and scales well ? No mirror admin would take the risk. Thanks to them for not doing so, and providing a stable service for http, ftp and sometimes rsync. cheers - -- -o) Pascal Bleser http://linux01.gwdg.de/~pbleser/ /\\ <pascal.bleser@skynet.be> <guru@unixtech.be> _\_v The more things change, the more they stay insane. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.0 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFDFg7pr3NMWliFcXcRAig/AJ9xUX8DVaQX2R/xdh39FNqrV7GwhQCbBzSe yWFBSkabdKffdMLI8YaYg30= =ydQy -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
What I say is not really related to the discussion, but heavily related to the thread subject, so... I usually dowload from ftp. but I could share the result on bitorrent if I knows how :-) in summary, how can I give away my ftp dir to bitorrent without having previously loaded it with bitorrent? thanks jdd -- pour m'écrire, aller sur: http://www.dodin.net http://valerie.dodin.net http://arvamip.free.fr

It depends on what client you use. The most simple thing is just to start the desired BitTorrent client as if you wanted to download the images you already have. Let him download a few kilobyte and stop it again. Find where your client has placed the incomplete images. Copy your complete images to the very same location and restart your BitTorrent client. Most clients will notice that you already now have some images, it will do a quick check and then start seeding. Obviously it is more comfortable to read in the documentation how to setup the place for the images directly. no doc for ktorrent on my machine, most bitorrent doc for windows users and I'm not at all familiar with torrent. you know, we are in a very unfamiliar config. We update each week. Now, to test torrent, I use still the beta3, but will probably update and need a way to reconnect after that. if bitorrent is to be the choice for download, it definitively needs to be better documented on opensuse site. If I understand the way, I will do, but now I use a (small, I can live with) part of my download bandwith to down load some files I have already... but there are more than 110 peers, now :-) jdd -- pour m'écrire, aller sur: http://www.dodin.net http://valerie.dodin.net http://arvamip.free.fr

Hmm, then either this client does not support that or there is a problem. I am using the "official" command line client from the BitTorrent package and this works very well in that situation. Robert -- Robert Schiele Tel.: +49-621-181-2214 Dipl.-Wirtsch.informatiker mailto:rschiele@uni-mannheim.de

and at least on the beta3, it has a nice gui. It works. Explanation added here (feel free to enhance it): http://www.opensuse.org/index.php?title=BitTorrent_and_openSUSE#Howto_share_... thanks jdd -- pour m'écrire, aller sur: http://www.dodin.net http://valerie.dodin.net http://arvamip.free.fr

Use Azureus, which for sure is able to do this. I'm doing it this way, also i'm only on a small adsl line (only 10kb up :-( ) Simply download the .torrent file and point it to save the isos in the folder you already saved yours. The directory has to be named "iso" on beta2 - beta4 to work this way. On beta1 it was "Isos", IIRC. HTH, Christian
