[opensuse] Photo viewer
Hi, wondering if there is a basic photo viewer, with similar functionality to the standard Windows photo viewer... I just want something (particularly to stop the missus whinging...) so you can set it up as the default, can double click on a photo, will automatically size for best viewing, can "easily" print the image, with a number of options for size, and multiple photos etc...? Not asking for much... I have tried all the 'default' programs installed in Suse, and none of them seem to be as functional as the standard Windows viewer, particularly when it comes to printing. Please assist with removing wife from back.... :-( Thanks, John. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I would suggest either Gwenview or Picasa. http://www.perfectreign.com/stuff/2009/20090228_gwenview_kphome.jpg Gwenview does pretty much the same exact thing as the default Vista photo viewer. You double-click on an image and it opens up. You can zoom, rotate, enhance, print, go back and forth in the folder and do other cool stuff. It doesn't look quite as pretty (in kde3) as does the Vista photo viewer (with aero) and it has a goofy name, but it works. Picasa for Wintendo has a nice viewer, too, but it gets a little tedious and takes over the whole screen. -- kai www.perfectreign.com | www.ecmplace.com www.twitter.com/PerfectReign -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Gwenview is incredibly pretty in KDE 4, especially in fullscreen/slideshow mode: http://ktown.kde.org/~wstephenson/gwenview42_2.png It has a nice set of basic photo editing tools, not as extensive/bewildering as Digikam. It uses this 'black home entertainment' look and feel when in fullscreen mode - it works the same way when not fullscreened, but uses the same L&F as the rest of your desktop: http://ktown.kde.org/~wstephenson/gwenview42.png It also does various contact sheet and album n-up prints, but the option for this lurks in the Plugins->Images->Print Assistant menu entry - File->Print... only prints a single image. < Plugins in the new Gwenview > Gwenview ver 1.42 (KDE 3 version) had the image Resize/Resample plugins under Plugins --> Batch Processing. Version 2.2.0 (KDE 4.2 version) does not have these plugins. The only plugins for Batch Processing in ver 2.2.0 are "DNG Converter" and "Batch Raw Converter". PS: I have both- KDE 3.5.10 + KDE 4.2 installed on the same oS 11.1 install. Most KDE 3.x applications work under properly KDE 4.2. I'm aware of it, but that's definitely not what I was using in 10.0. Nonetheless, having just now installed it on my 11.1 system, it seems to be adequate for my purposes. My perusal of the available packages via YaST's Software Management module makes me think there were more packages available for image viewing in 10.0 than there are in 10.3 (for the usual set of repositories), but given the fact that I can't remember what I was using in 10.0, that's got to be taken with a grain of salt.

Yes, that rings a bell, but I think it's KuickShow (I still have my 10.0 root file system on-line and locate still indexes it and that's the closest I could come to Kuickview). It was something a little nicer than xv for simple viewing (mostly insofar as it scanned for all the images in a directory and let you easily sequence back and forth through them), but not so overburdened with features and GUI elements as is Gwenview. It's too bad the KDE 3.5 version isn't in the repositories. But if http://kuickshow.sourceforge.net/ is any indication, it hasn't been updated for 7 1/2 years!

It seems that so some reason the heavy weight OpenOffice Draw, Impress and Writer, didn't make in the list, altough it will allow you to drop images on document, sort them as you like and print out. I tried few few functions from right-click menu, and it should have some minimal editing capabilities. Though, there is always option to use normal image editor to bring image in shape and size you want. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

gThumb seems quite good.. Just been playing with it, and set it up as the default photo viewer - does all the right things. Now, just need to control it's printing - worked fine for the default A4 page, but then tried to use a 'postcard' size photo paper, and didn't want to work properly... I will persist!
