Having irregularly had some problems with booting my Pentium II I suspected a memory problem. A long lasting test with the memory test program did not give any clues. Problems occurred now and then and normally could be overcome with a reboot. Today my dual boot system, Dos and Suse8 was willing to get my Dos session but at booting for Linux was not successful. I was able to get at the console but when I wanted to start KDE with startx I ended up in console again with a message from which I think following is most important. _loaderFileToMem() malloc failed and some lines lower fatal IO error 104 I am now in need for a translation of these lines of information. There seems to be something amiss with my memory ;-) and malloc (?) failed. Who is malloc? The Io error being 104 must have some meaning. Somebody knows where to find those meanings? Any ideas how to improve/repair my failing memory ;-) ? -- ************************************************************************ Registered Linux user 183145 NTReader v0.36w(P)/Beta (Registered) in conjunction with Net-Tamer.
malloc() is the memory allocator. In a C program, malloc() resides in libc and allocates memory for the application. This particular problem appears to be caused by an I/O error while loading a critical program (possibly /sbin/init). IMHO, your system apprears to have a hardware problem of some sort. I would suggest that you remove your memory (make sure you are grounded), and insert them in a different order. Also, if your memories are of different types the system can fail under some circumstances. In practice, it is best that all memories in a system are of the same type, speed rating and brand (although not imperative). Also, if you are using 133Mhz, try slowing that down to 100 in your bios. Lastly, but not likely, you could possibly have a problem with your disk. Remember virtual memory. Physical memory is broken up into pages. It is possible that there was some swapping going on during the load, and there is some corruption in the swap area. On 30 Aug 2002 at 19:36, Constant Brouerius van Nidek wrote:
