Greetings, I have a problem with cups and can only find noise on google, When I reboot, I have to reinstall my canon printer, this happens because a password is required to authenticate on cups, so that the printer can start. CUPS does not accept any of my local accounts or root account details. Even if I go through my browsers, (Konqueror, firfox, mozilla) (localhost:631) How does one fix this. Thanks Chad

Appologies for replying to my own post, If found the answer in the cups documentation, and I must say it does not jump out at you screeming " Me me I the answer to you question!!" ;) I went through the cupsd.conf and noticed that its using digest authentication, i.e. md5 I then read in the cups docs about lppasswd #lppasswd -a username and now you access it through you browser and print manager. Hope this helps someone searching the archs Cheers Chad

# lppasswd -g sys -a root it will ask you a password with a nunber in it. for the root user, create one. ( this password is for cups admin loging) then restart cups # rc cups restart and voila. login as root using the password fx (lifted from http://forums.suselinuxsupport.de/lofiversion/index.php/t1902.html)

We have a support database. Regards Johannes Meixner -- SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, Maxfeldstrasse 5 Mail: jsmeix@suse.de 90409 Nuernberg, Germany WWW: http://www.suse.de/
Use lppasswd -a username
you should only need to use that command to create a user
to admin cups through http.

CUPS does not accept any of my local accounts or root account details. Even if I go through my browsers, (Konqueror, firfox, mozilla) (localhost:631) Bring up a terminal window, and use the lppasswd(1) command to set up a CUPS password. as root: $ lppasswd -a <username> You will be prompted for a password.
Once you do this, restart the CUPS daemon:
$ rxcups restart
