[opensuse] KnetworkManager wireless connection problem
I am operating under SUSE 10.2, and the wireless card is really a centrino chip. It is recognized as a separate wireless card (wireless 220BG) and it was recognized on installation. I want to connect through various wifi hotspots and through a wireless router by which I connect to an ISP. The router is made by Linksys. The YAST connection information under YAST shows Connection: DHCP Operating Mode: Managed Application code: open Bit rate: auto Access Point: [blank} ESSID: [arbitrary name] There is no encryption key or WEP key. I clicked on the KnetworkManager icon and right clicked on the name of the wireless network name. A progress indicator appeared "Activating wireless network connection" and, after it indicated 28% completed, it conked out. Is there something in my YAST setup I should worry about? Dennis,
One thiung of note and that I have heard and seen in the past
NetworkManager and KNetworkManager do not like other things to
configure your network settings besides them. For example.
networkmanager will look at the network settings and say "hmmm...
seems like some other app is using this, better not do anything" or
rarely, if it does, it messes things up. You should stick with one
thing for config at all times... i know this does not solve the issue
but i hope it helps a bit.

First, Centrino is a designation of a compatible set of equipment in a machine, not a specific chipset. Centrino can apply to a machine that has a number of different wifi cards. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centrino You have to dig out the actual chipset of the wifi card, the number you mention (220BG) seems to be missing a digit.). Did you install the firmware package for Intel cards? -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

I was under the impression that a Centrino brought wi fi capability without the need to add an extra card. Am Iwrong? What does the Centrino's wireless function do?

It should be 2200BG.
Did you install the firmware package for Intel cards?
I don't recall doing that; there did not seem a need as 10.2 seened to recognize the Intel card right off. -- Best regards, Dennis J. Could you please file a bug on bugzilla.novell.com and attach /var/log/NetworkManager? Thanks, Timo -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
