I am having a similar problem which I never had until KDE took over my new machine. I used fvwm2 and had NO tv sound problems. If you are running KDE I bet it is causing you not to have sound unless KDE says to do it.

There has been general screwiness with sound and the new KDE. Perhaps this will help: http://dot.kde.org/1070894366/1071099818/. It solved my sound problems
