I found some reference to a tool called beagle (desktop search tool akin to google desktop for linux). They suggest here http://www.beaglewiki.org/index.php/Installing%20Beagle that you can install this using the following commands: For users of SUSE 9.1, SUSE 9.2 and Novell Linux Desktop 9, snapshot packages of all Beagle requirements can be found on the segfault.cam.novell.com open carpet server. Simply type: # rug sa http://segfault.cam.novell.com/ # rug sub mdes unfortunately, rug is not installed on my system. So my questions are: 0) Is beagle actually useful ? 00) Is there an alternative tool that does not rely on mono/gtk-sharp 1) Are there beagle rpms (plus all the dependency crap I need) for suse 9.2 ? 2) Where can I get rug ? Also, reading a bit more on the page, I even need to install a kernel patch .. Any userland tool that requires a kernel patch to work sucks donkeys through straws in my experience .. so should I even embark [1] on this path [1] har har .. beagle, bark ... sheesh, I need more coffee I guess Kind regards, -- Gerhard den Hollander Phone :+31-10.280.1515 Global ICT manager Direct:+31-10.280.1539 Fugro-Jason Fax :+31-10.280.1511 gdenhollander@Fugro-Jason.com POBox 1573 visit us at http://www.Fugro-Jason.com 3000 BN Rotterdam JASON.......#1 in Reservoir Characterization The Netherlands This e-mail and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the addressee. Both are available in the apt repositories. You can manually download the Beagle RPM from ftp.gwdg.de (the apt repository) and ALL the dependancies.... and there are a lot.... or you can use a package manager like Synaptic (GUI frontend for apt) or Red Carpet to install and manage the dependacies for you. It uses inotify to work, so you need a kernel with inotify included for it to work. Your comment is a little like complaining that you need to patch in XFS into your kernel to make your xfs userland tools work.

OK, I wasn;t aware what inotify was (should have checked before I posted, I know, see my coffee comment in the original post). inotify indeed seems like a nice tool, and indeed something a tool like this would need ... The biggest downside of having a kernel with that enabled is that next time round suse issues a kernel update, Ill ahve to find an inotify enabled kernel update as well ;) Currently listening to: 11 Stigmata Gerhard, <faliquid@xs4all.nl> == The Acoustic Motorbiker == -- __O Computers are *NO* solution =`\<, At best, they are a tool (=)/(=) At worst, they create only more problems

Or you might have some patience until 9.3 comes out, and save yourself from the suffering. 9.3 will have beagle in it.

Or get a kernel from the kernel-of-the-day directory on the ftp site. If I read the patches correctly, they have inotify in them

Just checked for 9.1 and it is not there.

It is part of the RedCarpet/OpenCarpet packages on the Novell server. ftp://ftp.novell.com/pub/ximian/redcarpet2 -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 * Only reply to the list please* "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge

And after all that trouble, I find that they only have i586 builds ;(
