[SLE] Installation SUSE 10.1 does not prompt request for CD2, CD3, CD4..
I found on a different forum someone with a similar problem but there was no reply to it. My big problem with the suse installation (I thought it was because I was installing on a LV) is that once the CD1 is installed, the machine reboots from the CD (which STILL has CD1, following the instructions) and prompt the main menu of "Boot from hard disk, installation, etc." Yast2 is never launched and hence never prompts asking for CD2. What should I do? I have tried everything possible and I am just wasting time and time... Any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks cc

I've not gone to 10.1 yet, but the other versions all say to eject the CD before rebooting. _Then_ it asks for the other CD's. (2, 3, etc.) This is how most 'puters are... having the CD drive above the internal HD in the boot food chain... Once the first CD is installed the box will say to reboot, then pop out the CD. Right, but the first option in the 1st CD boot menu, and the default, is to boot from the HD. Thus, even if you leave the CD in it will boot the HD, unless there is something wrong somewhere. - -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Made with pgp4pine 1.76 iD8DBQFErFzJtTMYHG2NR9URAqcRAJ0TV6WP6s5jTKiCBDFrN852osTvHwCfTab6 PsL6smjn0IyBBDlb7LnrfQw= =Q83t -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

So what exactly does happen? The only situation where YaST2 isn't launched automatically is when you're doing a remote install, e.g. over ssh. I've got a number of machines running 10.1 now, but I don't install from CD. There's got to be something odd in your environment for the CD-install not to work. /Per Jessen, Zürich -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

This seemed to be related to a USB drive I had connected while trying to do the install. Having removed the USB drive it then prompted for the disks in the correct order. 2nd attempt grub failed to install the kernel in the boot loader - couldn't get around that so eventually had to physically disconnect my 2nd hard drive (hdc) for grub to install on hda (?? don't ask me why ??). Third attempt has actually installed but it will not recognize my wireless card (D-Link). It worked fine in 9.3 and 10.0 so more investigation required. I'm now on day 4 of trying to get this installed and I am seriously thinking of re-installing 9.3 or switching to Fedora :-( Just because I can't afford to mess with it anymore! If this is reproducable, it sounds like a bug worth reporting.

It won't help you much, but like I said, I've got 10.1 running on a number of systems - five 400MHz PIIs, two brandnew IBM Thinkpads, a couple of Compaq 4-way servers, plus some miscellaneous Pentium4 systems. I install using the mini-ISO or from USB (for the laptops). I've seen one or two minor problems (with existing solutions/workarounds), but the install has always worked just fine. /Per Jessen, Zürich -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

I've got the complete inst-source tree downladed, and I install over NFS. in boot/i386/, you'll find a perl-script called mkbootdisk - you use that to put the installation system on your USB-stick - 64M is plenty of space, by the way. mkbootdisk --32 --partition /dev/sda1 <inst-source> (/dev/sda1 is my USB-stick). Then you boot your system-to-be-installed from this USB-stick. The actual installation from USB-stick is not much different to installing from CD. /Per Jessen, Zürich -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com
