Sorry to repeat this but it needs doing. Canon do NOT support Linux therefore do NOT buy Canon products. I feel I can say this with some authority as I have a Canon scanner that is only now starting to get SANE support - the contributors to that project have my heartfelt thanks, as do all FOSS contributors. Canon sim[ply don't want to know unless it's MS or Apple. -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Take care. This might have been one of those times. Overall, I agree with your sentiments re Canon, but in this case it seems the printer cambe before Linux, and even if not, you're berating the wrong person. If buying printers for Linux, HP makes a serious FOSS effort, Epson (inkjet at least) seems well supported, most Laser printers (including some GDI printers _not_ from Canon) work well. I'm using a Kyocera FS-920 which came with the necessary ppd for Linux (and docs to I think). Toshiba was a bit of a pain: I had to extract the PPD from a Windows driver. It's years since I fought with a Canon, but generally (for any brand) if the printer you have isn't listed, the driver from an earlier version is worth trying.

Sorry I didn't mean to 'berate' the questioner. However, I am 100% correct in my observations concerning Canon. I know and speak on authority because I have a piece of equipment from Canon that is simply not supported by them. I did purchase before I got into using Linux seriously so the same argument you have used could well apply to me. It does still stand though that Canon are very short sighted in their approach to only supporting MS and Apple. You mention that you have battled with Canon before now. Well done, I sincerely applaud you for this. Perhaps if more did this instead of moaning on mailing lists & forums then Canon would get the message. I personally regularly e-mail Canon UK and ask when they are going to start to support Linux - note, not if but when :-) I live in hope ;-) -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Take care. I don't know about scanners as I don't have one, but there is excellent linux support for some Canon printers. There is a program Called BrightQ that supports some Canon printers under Linux. Our office has a Canon ImageRunner 2800, which is a network copier/printer, with duplexing and multiple cassettes. ALL the features of the printer are supported. Our office also has a Mita network copier/printer as well as an HP 4100 printer, and the Canon ImageRunner has by far the best support under Linux. I don't believe BrightQ is produced by Canon, so I am not trying to say Canon supports Linux, but BrightQ does support Canon printers under Linux. The site for BrightQ and Canon printers is <http://canon.codehost.com> and is worth looking at if yo have a Canon printer. i have used it with both 9.3 and 10.0 of SUSE, and perhaps earlier, I just don't remember.
