[opensuse] Install troubles on E-machine EL1352 with Compaq FP745A monitor
All my trials to install the last four snapshots or 13.2 ended after the restart in a green screen with a rectangle with two maps; 'home' and 'thrash'. I could than create some other rectangles but no progress. What is going wrong? We gave you suggestions in your previous thread less than two weeks ago that you didn't finish following up on: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2015-06/msg00102.html http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2015-06/msg00104.html Which DE did you select during installation? Did you configure during installation for auto-login? Did you repartition or otherwise wipe out one or more previous installations? Were these installs from live media rather than installation media? -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Which DE did you select during installation? Did you configure during installation for auto-login? Did you repartition or otherwise wipe out one or more previous installations? Were these installs from live media rather than installation media? I used installation DVDs, checked before use, as I did the last twenty years. In some cases I deleted the Linux partitions before the installation; I found no difference. I also tried the Advanced Options choice before the restart; I found no difference. I think I finally did enough testing and research to find out. It turns out I was derelict in testing on my own GeForce 6150SE system. I thought it had a hardware problem causing the unique problems I experienced. After all, it was given to me because it was giving trouble to its owner. He bought a new motherboard, CPU and RAM. I installed it and openSUSE, and got his old hardware in the deal. So I presumed hardware defect rather than software defect. 13.1 worked OK, and 13.2 and TW were OK as long as not pushed beyond basic function. It eventually turned out to have bad RAM causing its sporadic inability to POST. Nouveau got broken upstream on the 6150SE over two years ago. https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=71382 explains that for certain GeForce gfxchips to work with newer nouveau and kernel requires a special kernel cmdline parameter: nouveau.config=NvMSI=0 The openSUSE installer does not use the nouveau driver, which explains why André's repeated video trouble didn't manifest during installation, only afterward. Ubuntu users were having similar trouble 6 months before the upstream bug was filed. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/11... It looks like https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=898932 may be the same problem. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
