RE: [SLE] Gnome 1.4 SuSE packages..still in fine form.
Ehmm my experience has been pretty great. Except with nautilus which went mental when i gave it control of the desktop. I wacked it out quickly, re-installed it and it's been okay since then. I am using sawfish as the window manager though. -----Original Message----- From: Ben Rosenberg [mailto:ben@whack.org] Sent: 28 May 2001 05:34 To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: [SLE] Gnome 1.4 SuSE packages..still in fine form. /rant I just tried to use the gnome 1.4 packages from the SuSE ftp site....opinion..just as crappy as usual. Anyone got this to work right..mine just keeps telling me the Desktop pager applet has died and then the whole desktop blinks..no shit..blinks. Nautilus won't complete it's setup and after a while of this blinking the whole thing dies and goes back to the prompt. Nice. I downloaded the packages from Ximian Gnome and have installed them on two computers with no problems. It technically has not been released for SuSE 7.1 yet, but so far it's running smoothly. To get it to install on a 7.1 box, you need to cheat a bit, though. The installer will check the distro & version and will bail if it sees SuSE 7.1, so you'll need to change what it sees. The file that controls this is /etc/SuSE-release; I renamed this to /etc/SuSE-release.real, then made a copy named /etc/SuSE-release.ximfake and editted it to: SuSE Linux 7.0 (i386) VERSION = 7.0 Then I made a symbolic link from /etc/SuSE-release to the changed file while I was installing. After that, it installed and configured without a hitch. dano ps: standard disclaimer applies -- this worked for me; YMMV. If you try this and it hoses your machine, please don't direct flames my way. thanks. ************************************************************************* Daniel Prosser, System Admin, IT System Support, ISO New England, USA *************************************************************************
