[opensuse] Configuring a default WLAN connection?
Hello, I am trying to create a very very lightweight OpenSuse environment, so as to give maximum resources to GrandOrgue for playing an organ. It will be running IceWM. I would still like to have the ability to go online from the same machine. But I don't want to run nm-applet at all times. Ideally I'd want to keep Network Manager, but to have a default connection for my home wi-fi, and only start nm-applet if I want some other network or if I am experiencing problems. So how can I set a default/system/etc Network Manager connection? -- Yours, Mikhail Ramendik Unless explicitly stated, all opinions in my mail are my own and do not reflect the views of any organization -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

If you have wifi connection for SSID and this SSID is visible in scan, NetworkManager will by default attempt to connect to it. Nothing special needs to be done. If multiple SSID are visible and connection for each exists NM will normally chose based on signal strength; I think it prefers last connected SSID. It is possible to disable autoconnect for individual connection if you only want to ever connect manually. There is also autoconnect-priority property which probably comes most close to "default connection". -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

This does appear to be working, after I set up the connection once with nm-applet. But how does Network Manager store the password? Can I make this connection shared among all users so it comes up, ideally, even before GUI login? -- Yours, Mikhail Ramendik Unless explicitly stated, all opinions in my mail are my own and do not reflect the views of any organization -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

In the configuration you specify that this connection is a system one, or that other users may use it, or similar wording. From then on, it will ask for root's password to change it. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.0 x86_64 at Telcontar)

Is it possible to configure such situations to accept instead the password of any qualified user, in the same way as one can with sudo? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

You can also configure the connection in YaST-Network to be activated on boot if your machine will not move an need to connect to other access points. (even if it does need to change later, you can just change it in YaST, or undo that setting an go to a network manager type app) For the laptop I leave running at home, I do it this way and I have no need for any network-manager type application at all. -- David C.
