Thank you for the reply back... I was trying to figure out how the [opensuse] part gets into the subject line, guess it's automatic. I suppose it's useful if you do not filter well, but it's sort of messy and makes it hard to see full subject lines of long thread titles, which the netiqette guide for the mailing lists recommends. Guess I'll deal with it though. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Surely you did not think it originated in your mail client??

Well, while I agree that this sort of Subject adulteration is unnecessary and unwelcome, it is near-universal. (Like top-posting, thread hijacking, failure to trim any quoted material at all or to proofread one's postings before issuing the "send" command...)
Guess I'll deal with it though.
You need not. At least not if you use a good mail client. KMail has a filter action "Rewrite Header" It can be used to excise these incursions designed for those who are users of impoverished mail clients or who are impoverished users of capable mail clients. I thought perhaps it was some sort of policy of SUSE mailing lists, today is my first day reading it, I wasn't entirely sure.

I've been on several mailing lists, and have never seen it, you must mean it's universal with SUSE mailing lists.

I can't seem to find this option, where would I look to find it please? (Using KMail from KDE4 PIM.) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No, it is by far the more common approach throughout the realm of email distribution lists.

I don't know about the KMail from KDE 4, but in KDE 3.5, it's an action available in filters once their criteria have been met. It's one of the values of the "Filter Actions" pop-up in the "Genera" tab of each filter's definition. I suppose I've just been lucky to have never encountered anything but mailman before, I've been on some 50 different project mailing lists, and none have done this.

And newer mailman versions do it by default unless the list owner switches it off. Philipp -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes, it's done by the mailing list software. I think it's a stupid idea to generate them as there are enough other ways to filter your email. Philipp -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

If you read mail on a web client, like gmail, it makes things a bit easier to see the [list name] on the subject. For instance, gmail web service can not filter on the "X-Mailinglist:" header. There is a trick, but is not perfect. And, if somebody sends you a direct CC plus the list mail, gmail users normally only receive the direct answer because it arrives faster and the one from the list is automatically deleted as duplicate (same msgid). Thus, if the direct answer has the [list name] you can identify it and reply to the list. It has its uses... - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Filter on "from" works fine though, so this really isn't good justification at all. Just set the filter to move things to the specific label for that mailing list, voila. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You can not filter this list on the "from" field. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I use "to:(opensuse@opensuse.org)" for the GoogleMail filter and it has been working perfectly. Regards Ingolf -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
