[opensuse] Java plugin not working in 64-bit Firefox?
I'm having issues with getting Java to work in my 64-bit Firefox... or any other browser for that matter. I'm using this page as my benchmark... http://www.tribaltrouble2.com/main (also I have been using the java.com page and the "Do i have Java" link) I've tested it on openSUSE 11.0 32-bit using 32-bit Firefox plus Java 1.6 and both the java.com site and the Tribal Trouble 2 site work fine (Java.com reports the right version and the TT2 game will start). On my openSUSE 11.1 64-bit install... no web based Java will work. I've installed 1.5, 1.6 and 1.7, including the Java plugins... I've checked the settings in the Java Config tool... nothign seems to get Java to actually work from within a browser. Outside of the browser, Java apps work fine. Any pointers? C. I use openjdk version. Works fine with Firefox x86_64. If You have Java plugin already installed try run as root: update-alternatives --config java update-alternatives --config javaplugin The first command help to choose default java vm, and the second one - default java plugin. Ok, after much tinkering with teh update-alternative command... exiting and restarting Firefox, I seem to have it working... but.. confusingly.. things don't add up so nicely. java is set to jre-1.6.0-openjdk javaplugin it set to java-1.6.0-sun.1.6.0 and libjavaplugin.so.x86_64 points to jre-1.7.0-icedtea Oddly enough this combination... works... and I have Java working in the browser. Thanks for the pointer to the Wiki page. C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

OpenJDK does not work with most Java applets. Sun recently released a 64-bit Java plugin, Not sure about openSUSE 11.0 but for 11.1 I was able to get it through YaST: java-1_6_0-sun-plugin 1.6.0.u13-0.1.1-x86_64, in the updates repo. It would not be a bad idea to remove any "OpenJDK" or "IcedTea" packages you have installed at the same time. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well.... the 1.7 (IcedTea) package was the only one I could convince to work with FF3. I had previously installed 1.5 plus the 1.5 plugin... didn't work. Did the same with the 1.6 Java plyus plugin... still didn't work.. then I tried 1.7.. still no go. This is with installing only one release at a time, removing the older release each time. Then I tried all 3 at the same time using the setup tools to switch between... this when things "started to work"... using 1.6 for Java, and 1.7 IcedTea for the plugin. Weird... makes little sense. All through this I've been comparing settings (browser and otherwise) with 2 other 32 bit installs I'm using. For now.. it seems to be working in all the testing I've done today. Hello Clayton and others, Running 11.0 64 bit here, 64 bit Firefox 3.0b5, and KDE3.5. Also having big problems with Java that I didn't have on 10.3. All exactly the same except the OS version. I used 1.7 (Iced Tea) and it's plugins there and it worked perfectly. Neither 1.6 and it's plugins work, nor 1.7 Iced Tea and it's plugins work on 11.0. (Both work fine on Konqueror) In fact when I tried 1.6 and went to the Java site and clicked on the "Do I have Java" link it actually killed Firefox. 1.7 survived that but didn't work. Then I tried your weird combination of 1.6 and the 1.7 plugins. No good. I also went to the Wiki page suggested by Mariusz and followed the instructions there step-by-step. Still no good. Maybe I need to upgrade or downgrade Firefox? I guess since you have it working you will stop fooling with it. If you, or anybody else have any other ideas or thoughts please pass them on. icedtea is very experimental and should not be used. After 11.0 was dropped out from SUSE and it exists just for historical reasons, because it was a first open source java released by Sun.
Neither 1.6 and it's plugins work, nor 1.7 Iced Tea and it's plugins work on 11.0.
You must specify if you told about openjdk or sun java, because those version have different Java plugins. Sun Java should works almost everywhere.

What JVMs do you have installed? rpm -qa | grep java-1_? What do you have in update-alternatives --display javaplugin? I suggest remove icedtea and openjdk and use only Sun Java, because it would works without a problem on openSUSE 11.0. Hello Michal, Thanks for trying to help For your info iced tea was the only java Icould get to work on 10.3. Yes, because there were no openjdk and Sun Java with 64bit plugin available in times of 10.3, so the IcedTea was only one possibility.

Well, there are some issued with new Sun Java plugin, but I did not hear about a Firefox crash. Do you have some details? For example a crash log? Or some site which causes it? Please fill a new bug and I'll try to forward it to Sun. The 11.0 contains a MozillaFirefox 3.0, which might be compatible with libnpjp2.so, so there is no problem. Hi Michal, thanks for staying with this. No, it just dies. Closes, shuts down. If I go to restart it I get the message do I want to restart the previous session ot start a new one. No logs that I know of. You know where that may be?

Well my version of Firefoxis 3.0b5. That is why I asked earlier in this thread that it might be a problem with Firefox itself.

It might be the problem. I see the 3.0.11 [1] in update repository for 11.0 so update of your system is really recommended even if I'm not sure if it really helps.
