[SLE] 6.4 and ALSA with SMP -- A solution??
want/need to get sound working on my dual processor Suse 6.4 box. The support page has an update to the stock sound driver, but then states: "Please note, that the modules of this update will not work with SMP machines." But then offers no alternative. I did try to install it anyway, maybe they were lying ;) Nope, they were telling the truth alright, doesn't work on my SMP machine. Does anybody have an alternate solution?????? OSS perhaps? Thanks!! Any help would be great! -- Ryan ed_hume(at)hotmail(dot)com _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Hello, Ryan. My dual P233MMX system running Suse 6.3 has an AWE64 card in it. After reading the manual, and scratching round the Suse site, I also found that ALSA was a no-go on SMP boxes. If you look on the CDs, you will find that there are both OSS and OSS_SMP. The SMP one works in multi-processor environments. However, do not expect miracles. The OSS drivers really aren't that good (I think this is the 2nd time I've said that in 3 days; the OSS guys probably hate me), especially when it comes to silence. They seem to put a constant stream of faint static out of the speakers, which I have yet to come across with the ALSA drivers. But, at least you can get sound to work on your SMP box with them, and they are pretty simple to set up. I think I just followed the instructions in the manual, and it all worked as described. Bye for now, Stuart.

Recompile alsa from source on an SMP box and install/configure it with alsaconf. [That's what I did. I am writing this mail on an 6.4-SMP box with a working alsa.]
But then offers no alternative. I did try to install it anyway, maybe they were lying ;) Nope, they were telling the truth alright, doesn't work on my SMP machine. The problem is that part of alsa are kernel modules. Like all other kernel modules you need to use SMP-compiled modules instead of UP-modules.
Does anybody have an alternate solution?????? OSS perhaps?
