[opensuse] Audio CDs no longer detected

Hello Some time in the last three days my PC has stopped detecting audio CDs in my CD/DVD ROM drive (I haven't tried a DVD yet). After spending a bit of time reading up on this on the web, I have tried adding myself to the audio and cdrom groups, although I've never needed to be in them before. Nothing has worked yet. K3B says that no optical device is detected, and nothing appears in Dolphin and there's no device notifier popup when I insert a CD. I don't really have the knowledge to troubleshoot this so I would appreciate any assistance. I'm on Leap 42.1. Many thanks in advance. Kind regards, Huw

perhaps your drive has expired :( open yast2 and go to hardware and see if yast sees your optical drive. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Hmm...it's only a year old and makes the expected noises when I insert a disc, so a hardware failure didn't occur to me. However I cannot see any reference to an optical drive in hwinfo (I looked under the IDE and block device categories and anywhere else that looked vaguely related). Oh well, at least they're cheap to replace these days! Thank you for helping. Kind regards, Huw

Hi Huw, As Patrick suggests, the drive may have simply failed. Boot a live CD / DVD for a quick test. If that fails, power down, open the system and carefully inspect, unplug and remake the CD / DVD drive's cables / connectors. Boot to BIOS / system setup to see if the drive is still visible and enabled there. It's pointless to chase software / configuration issues if the hardware is marginal or failing / has failed. hth & regards, Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Ah, this is one of those forehead-slapping moments. You're absolutely right; I pulled the plugs out, cleaned what I could, plugged them back in and like magic the drive is working again. Thank you for the suggestion Anton! Kind regards, Huw

What does command "inxi -d" report? You should see something like Optical: /dev/sr0 model: Optiarc DVD RW AD-7283S dev-links: cdrom, cdrw, dvd, dvdrw Features: speed: 48x multisession: yes audio: yes dvd: yes rw: cd-r,cd-rw,dvd-r,dvd-ram If you don't have inxi, as root install with commands cd /usr/local/bin && wget -Nc smxi.org/inxi && chmod +x inxi Leap may have a package. http://smxi.org/ Roger -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
