How to add a hot swapable SCSI harddisk?
I need to add a harddisk to a running system (Compaq). Some questions I need to be sure before I can do that: 1. what is the SCSI id of the existing harddisk? So that I use for sure a new ID. 2. the new harddisk should get three partitions: swap temp var How do I format these partiotion, I guess I should use reiser, shouldn't I? 3. How to move all temp & var to the new disk Mv is not the problem, but so that all programs continue to log and that a minimum of time a log will be lost! Thanks! bye Ronald -- Ronald Wiplinger (CEO of ELMIT) http://www.elmit.com +886 (0) 915 653-452 - I'm a SpamCon Foundation Member, #694, Verify it at http://www.spamcon.org

cat /proc/scsi/scsi

mkswap for swap. Then swapon. mkfs.xxxxx for the other partitions.
shouldn't I?

Lots of luck on the rest of it. I really don't think it's going to fly. For one thing you haven't asked how to get the system to recognize the new drive.
Thanks!

Bruce answered 1 and 2. You can use YaST2 disk partitioner to format the 2 partitions you want to use for temp and var.
Question 3:
Both /tmp and /var are actively used directories. It is not advisable to
do what you want with an active system in multi-user mode. There are
things in /var such as /var/run/utmp, /var/logs and other files that are
updated constantlywhen you are in multi-user mode.
You should shut down to single user mode. Here are the steps:
Shutdown to single user mode.
mount /dev/sdXY /mnt # mount SCSI disk X (a,b,c,d...) Partiton Y (the
one for /tmp) (1,2,3...) on /mnt.
cd /tmp
cp -pR . /mnt # Copy everything to the new SCSI
optionally, rm -rf * #remove contents of /tmp Be careful
umount /mnt
mount /dev/sdXY /mnt # mount SCSI disk X (a,b,c,d...) Partiton Y (the
one for /var) (1,2,3...) on /mnt.
cd /var
cp -pR . /mnt # Copy everything to the new SCSI
optionally, rm -rf * #remove contents of /var Be careful
umount /mnt
Now, you should put the appropriate entries in /etc/fstab such that
these will be mounted automatically.
