I can only surmise that you either have an old KsCD version or your digital playback cable between your player and sound card is not attached. My version is 1.6 (using KDE 3.5.5 release 50.1) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

That cable is analogue playback.. the "digital" playback cable is the one connected to your IDE controller. -- The best way to accelerate a computer running Windows is at 9.81 m/s² -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Also note that some mobo's and optical drives come with ports for digital sound connection between the two, bypassing the IDE cable. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

S/PDIF is one such standard, for digital connection between devices and sound card http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/82 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No kidding? There are CD/DVD drives with S/PDIF connectors? Optical? Coax? Interesting... Now that I think of it, I wonder if there are audio cards out there with S/PDIF input connectors. I've had several with S/PDIF outputs, but I don't think I've seen S/PDIF inputs.

Ah. And I see now that my optical drives _do_ have those outputs and so does the on-board audio on my mainboard. Cool. Randall Schulz -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Randall Schulz For what it's worth, I tried KsCD after reading this thread and it didn't work. When I tried Amarok it worked just fine. Is using KsCD mandatory? S

I use xmms, and it works just fine. It definitely has a setting for analog or digital extraction, and AFAICR always has. Can't stand amarok, personally, but as always, mileage varies. -- The best way to accelerate a computer running Windows is at 9.81 m/s² -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No, you used to need a third party input plugin such as xmms-cdread for digital extraction. Charles -- /* Fuck me gently with a chainsaw... */ linux-2.0.38/arch/sparc/kernel/ptrace.c

I've also got xmms, but it just comes up as an unreadable tiny black square on my monitor. I've failed to make any sense out of it at all. Peter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No, Randall. KsCD is not mandatory. I have Amarok 1.3 installed, but I don't see how to get it to play anything. I tried File | Play media ... and then in the file selection box that appears, selected /dev/cdrecorder, /dev/cdrom and /dev/dvd, all of which sounded likely, but none of them worked. I got a message saying, "Some media could not be loaded (not playable)": but I know it is playable, because I can play it from the same drive in XP. Perhaps I'm missing something?
