[opensuse] Computer boots from hard disk only
Hi all, I already asked this on our local list, but no advance yet. I have a dual oS 12.1 (64 bit, KDE 4.9.5)/ Win7 (32 bit) system. I wanted to upgrade to oS 12.2. Since my DVD reader does not work, I created a live CD with KDE on a CD disk with K3b (of course to be used in another optical drive), and also prepared a live USB with the same content with image writer. I set the boot sequence in BIOS but to no avail. I got a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner and the process stopped here. When removable disk is before HDD in the boot sequence then the system boots as normal from HDD, that is USB skipped. But if CD drive is before HDD then booting locks up with that black screen. The HDD is SATA, the optical drive and another HDD is on an IDE cable. I changed the IDE ribbon cable, upgraded BIOS, reset BIOS to factory default, but did not succeed. Also tried all six USB ports, but nothing happenned. The USB ports and CD-RW work normally either in oS or in Win7. The motherboard is ASUS P5Q-EM, with 3 GB DDR2 RAM. Any help is welcome. Since this is what you want why not configure zypper with openSUSE 12.2 repositories and then use zypper dup . -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Or you copy the install kernel and initrd from 12.2 into /boot/ of your system and adjust your boot loader configuration to boot the 12.2 install system. This approach is documented in the wiki at http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Remote_installation Unfortunately this isn't very obvious. Regards: Albert Well, there were not any issues with zypper dup, but there are some with reboot. The boot screen with the choices appeared, and as you can see, Win7 works OK. Failsafe mode of oS 12.2 can be started, but spins HDD at least for an hour (then I stopped it), Desktop 12.2 does not start, it stop after saying something about suse firewall. And there is an additional new line: GRUB2- GNU GRUB 2. Trying to start it the answer is an error message complaining of some missing things.
Next I will try to understand the tutorials you recommended and maybe repeat the whole thing. I also do not want to have GNOME and Xfce any more - so perhaps I can install KDE only. Most of my installations are started this way, though instead of putting installation kernel and initrd in /boot I put them in /boot/suse<VERSION>.

I believe the better doc for what you describe is: http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Network_installation#Media_free_network_installat... The prep and startup method described there also work without using network during installation by using a previously downloaded installation .iso as the source instead of the network, by following the scheme at http://en.opensuse.org/Linuxrc under install=hd. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Yes! And there even the wget --output-document stuff got merged. There still 12.1 is referenced. But users going this way will be able to transfer the approach to 12.2 or even better adjust the wiki page.
The prep and startup method described there also work without using network during installation by using a previously downloaded installation .iso as the source instead of the network, by following the scheme at http://en.opensuse.org/Linuxrc under install=hd.
Hm, why don't you add a reference to this page at the 'See also' section of the page? Cheers, Lars -- Lars Müller [ˈlaː(r)z ˈmʏlɐ] Samba Team + SUSE Labs SUSE Linux, Maxfeldstraße 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany

Thanks for the tips and hints! Now 12.2 is installed. Unfortunately I could not make Grub2 to work with Win7 so I went back to Grub and it worked out of the box.
