Here's the light :). when you installed xfce you gave the command xfce_setup. this changes a few files including .Xdefaults, .gtkrc, etc.... and saves a backup in $HOME/.xfce dir. you can try to restore the original looks with th command xfce_remove (you should do that everytime you want out of xfce) or you can copy them manually.

Well I did use both xfce_setup and xfce_remove yesterday. I did find a $HOME/.xfce-bkup dir with .gtkrc .xsession and one more file, restored them to original location still no change. I ll try to use xfce color settings to regain the natural colors - that might work.
