As much as I am honored that you mention this book, too, I cannot recommend it as a book for actually _learning_ Linux. It assumes, you already know, what you are doing and might be a bit too advanced for a beginner. Michael Kofler's book is a very good start. Hey Huys, I am have installed and set up Suse 7/0 and am having a great time so far. Everything is working fairly well. But I need to download and install CDparanoia, and Lame to get the Krabber CD-ripper to work. Does anyone know where the RPM's for suse would be? Also, I have the source tarballs, but when I try to compile it complains about not findink /gtk? Any ideas? Thanks in advance. CDparanoia should be included as "cdparano" - Lame will never be included because there are patent issues involved (the Fraunhofer Institute holds a patent on MP3 encoding).

Did you install package "gtkdev"? You need it for compiling GTK apps. Hi, There are many good places to start. I find Mark G. Sobel's book "A Practical Guide to Linux" or "Hands on Linux" to be a good place to start. There are several (most of them) from publisher O'Reilly that are worth looking at and I also recommend looking through the following howto http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Reading-List-HOWTO/ I have not read all that are listed there, but the ones I have read are very good so I trust the source. I don't know about the distribution specific books but others might. Tim On 10/19/00 at 11:31 PM Eric Richards wrote:

I wish O'Reilly had book like "Learning Red Hat Linux" for SuSE that
I could recommend... but then, why not start with the documentation
SuSE gives you? After that, I would recommend _Running Linux_ from
O'Reilly.

Because of the rapid development of Linux distros, _everything_ is out of date by the time you get it at a bookstore. All you can do is try and find a general book and hope that it will last for about 1-1/2 years. That's about the best you can expect. BTW, the "Handbook" for FreeBSD (available free on their website) is written far better than most Linux howto's and man pages, and most of it is just Unix, so it applies. Be careful to distinguish the areas that don't, of course. At 23:31 10/19/2000 +1300, you wrote:
