[opensuse] kde 4.4 bugs - first looks
Listmates, Here is a first look at some of the old and new bugs in kde 4.4. There is much more good than bad in this release so this is just a list for discussion and confirmation for others who have moved to 4.4. Below the bugs are listed with two columns. The first tis the category (new=haven't seen before in kde4x, k43b2 etc.. means I bugged the problem during the kde 4.3 beta 2 testing, etc.., reg=regression (fixed in prior releases, back now). The second column is the description and hopefully is descriptive enough so you can tell what I'm talking about: new konqueror "edit bookmarks" entry boxes at the bottom are way too small they only use only 1/2 the available space there k43b2 strigi select index location - folder navigation window too small for 4 - 5+ level directories & no horiz scroll bar, try selecting /usr/share/doc/packages/Apache2... This one was bug: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=208714 which was marked fixed, so I guess this should be a regression. However, I have never seen this actually fixed. reg No Printer Configuration in System Settings (kde4-printer-applet-4.4.0-115.2 installed) new Local Network Browsing Username & Password NOT used for network printer detection and browsing?? new CUPS not finding locally shared network printers (related to above??) new SystemSettings Dialog Suspends All keyboard input to any other dialog. Try setting (alt+print), get the Qt error, hit print screen for ksnapshot, then choose "save as", and try to type a filename to save as -- Nogo, nada. new Ctrl+Print in application Kwin does not copy screenshot to clipboard new SystemSettings Crashes Often - Try computer admin -> standard shortcuts, No drkonqi? reg Add Widget Slider Disappears as Soon as Created When Focus Set to 'Follow Mouse'. With 4.3.98, it stayed visible until the 'X' close button pressed. new Now way to customize the Mouse application menu from Desktop Settings -> Mouse Actions -> Add Action -> Left Button - "assign: Application Launcher", Now you get the whole entire suse super-menu that isn't exactly what you don't want to try and navigate as a fly-out menu on the desktop. k4 No way to assign a 'custom launcher menu' to 'mouse click on desktop' (simple in kde3, you had the choice to configure multiple custom menus to assign to a mouse click on the desktop depending on your task at hand) (related to above?) I know there are many more, but these are the ones I stumbled across today. All in all, I'm impressed with 4.4. If there is a complaint here, it would be that more of the bugs that have been on file for nearly a year are not fixed before the next NEW KDE X.X HAS BEEN RELEASED. I know that goes back to the manpower issue, but at least I would hope that priority is given to fixing the simple, ... but annoying... bugs before a new release gets announced. Good job guys,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, keep the faith, she will get there. new Running 'strigggggggggggggiclient', adding folders, and choosing 'start indexing' causes massive character repeats in Thunderbird 3 :p -- David C. Listmates,
<snip> Thanks for all the information. I do have one/some question as the result of my being "new" to the opensuse community. At the moment my opensuse 11.2 system doesn't indicate a update/upgrade is available to KDE 4.4. So, has 4.4 been officially released for 11.2? Or, do I have to enable a "beta" repository to get it to install...or? Ed, Opensuse has several different "sets" of kde repositories. You have the normal kde repositories that contain the version shipped with 11.2 (a dog, you need to change repos), then there is the kde4.3 repositories that holds the latest 4.3 stable version -- currently 4.3.5, and then there is 'factory' which is where opensuse does its development work on the latest releases of packages to test, etc.. KDE:Factory is usually stable enough for daily use as suse doesn't change it enough to break too many things, but be aware that it isn't thoroughly test, so you may find a bug or two. What you need to do is disable your current kde repositories. Just use yast -> Repository Manager and look for any repositories with 'KDE' in the name and disable them. The simply add the following repositories to get kde44 when you update: http://download.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/D... =http://download.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Community/... http://download.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Playground... The easy way to add the repositories is: zypper ar TheRepositoryURL RepositoryAlias Example zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/D... kde4factory Do the same for the other 2. Then use yast -> Repository Manager to (TEMPORARILY DISABLE THE 'openSuSE Updates' REPOSITORY (or similar name on your system), then use yast -> Software Management, and choose 'Packages -> All Packages -> Update If Newer Version Available', resolve any dependencies and you may need to click the 'AllowVendorChange' check box to get the packages from the factory repositories (I just enable the setting in /etc/zypp/zypp.conf to get rid of that hassle) and choose Accept and ----> go get a beer and let it run for a while. You will probably have 200M - 600M of updates depending on your setup. I have a slow 1M connection so it took about an hour to do. Good luck! P.S. also install 'webpin' which is a command line utility to search all packages in all of the repositories to help find any package you are looking for. Then you can just browse: http://download.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse/repositories/ To locate the repository to add or just to see what all other repositories are available. -- David C. Beware that using these repos might break your system! Only the DVD + official updates are supported! the least risk is the STABLE repo, Factory is more risky and UNSTABLE is definitely calling for trouble. So you might want to read the opensuse KDE wiki pages before you use any of the repos. http://en.opensuse.org/KDE/KDE4 There are more links at the bottom of that page.
