I have decide to go to Gnome since it is more flexible and I like the GTK. More important thing is that I am sick of MS Windows interface and that is why I chose Gnome over KDE. Now I am looking for a windows manger that look nice and not too slow. Currently I am using E but I found it a little bit slow although I have a TNT2 card. It certainly looks great but ... It seems like the only other choices I have will be either Blackbox or Windows Maker. Could you guys give me some opinion over these two? Are they faster? Blackbox certainly looks better but don't know the performance. By the way, I have installed the Nvidia 's Linux driver and I wonder if I should still choose SVGA or Diamond Viper 770 in Yast? Thanks for all your help. The speed of a window manager is not really dependent on the video card, rather on the libraries that the window manager uses to run. X is not as hardware-intensive as Windows is.
It seems like the only other choices I have will be either Blackbox or Windows Maker. Could you guys give me some opinion over these two? Are they faster? Blackbox certainly looks better but don't know the performance.
I would *not* recommend BB for a GNOME system; though the seem to get along on the outside, the cores don't really communicate with each other well without heavily patching the source tree. As far as BB vs. WindowMaker for speed, they are very well-matched. BB and WindowMaker are quite possibly the two fastest readily-available and well-supported window managers available. Appearance is a matter of opinion, but WindowMaker is fully GNOME-Compliant. Three other options you might want to look into are Sawmill (now the default window manager for GNOME, http://sawmill.sourceforge.net), XFCE (http://www.xfce.org) and IceWM (http://icewm.sourceforge.net). All three are based on GTK+, are fully GNOME-Compliant, and can be very fast. I find (in my limited frame of reference) that XFCE and IceWM are not as fast in operation as BB and WMaker are, but the difference is negligible.
By the way, I have installed the Nvidia 's Linux driver and I wonder if I should still choose SVGA or Diamond Viper 770 in Yast?
This should not matter, since the Riva (V770) server is a link to the SVGA server. Just a side note; the term `windows manager' is incorrect, as is `X Windows'. `window manager' (no `s') or `X' are the proper terms. Likewise, it is the `X Window System' (not X Windows System'), and `X' is preferred over the term `Window System' when used in short form; this limits verbal communication errors. That's one of my pet peeves ;). -- -=|JP|=- Jon Pennington | Atipa Linux Solutions -o) jpennington@atipa.com | Kansas City, MO /\\ 816-241-2641 x107 | http://www.atipa.com _\_V -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
