Hi: I have been having a lot of trouble getting sound (SB16) to work in Suse 7.3 Yast2 was hopeless, rendering a system in which Realplayer couldn't open the audio device. I used alsaconf and now things are much better. I can run alsamixer, but kmix wont run. A process shows up in the ps but no window. Sometimes in the past the kmix window would appear, but no controls. But now after running alsaconf, no kmix at all, just a process that sticks in the system not doing anything. I have tried turning on/off the artsd, but that doesn't make any difference, nor do I know what the heck it is supposed to do anyway. Any ideas why kmix is broken? Thanks. -- _____________________ Christopher R. Carlen crobc@earthlink.net Suse 7.3 Linux 2.4.10
Usually when kmix starts, it lands in the "systray" section of kicker. You would then have to right-click->restore to actually get the window. Could this be it? Also, sometimes I get two tabs in kmix, one with no controls at all, and one working tab. I just close the one with no controls and then it works until it fails again :) regards Anders On Friday 23 November 2001 02:07, Chris Carlen wrote:

No, I am aware of that behavior from Suse 7.1, in which the mixer works fine (running on the same machine as Suse 7.3, in which kmix is broken.) Kmix hangs when I start it for a long time, with the little speaker icon hanging off the cursor telling me it's trying to start up. But then after about 30 seconds, it just isn't anywhere, but in the process table. It starts as one PID, then that PID goes away, and kmix settles on a new PID usually one greater than the one with which it started.

I would be happier with that problem. But mine just doesn't work. Artsd or no artsd, as well. ____________________________________ Christopher R. Carlen Principal Laser/Optical Technologist Sandia National Laboratories CA USA crcarle@sandia.gov

I have discovered that I can get kmix to work. Here is the way it works: ~ $ kmix& [1] 3023 ~ $ [1]+ Done kmix No kmix appears. The process appears to have died. ~ $ ps ax|grep kmix 3024 pts/5 S 0:00 kmix 3026 pts/5 S 0:00 grep kmix Now I have a kmix hanging out as the next higher PID, but no window. ~ $ kmix& [1] 3027 ~ $ [1]+ Done kmix Run kmix again. I didn't kill the original. This time it appears to die again, but a window appears! It works. ~ $ ps ax|grep kmix 3024 pts/5 S 0:00 kmix Interestingly, the kmix is still the PID from before. Can anyone tell me what is going on here? Is something wrong and can it be fixed? Thanks. -- _____________________ Christopher R. Carlen crobc@earthlink.net Suse 7.3 Linux 2.4.10
