OK, but can you untar a gzipped file? (ie untar a file originally called
filename.whateverextension.GZ renamed to filename.whateverextension.TAR)?
That's what's happening: a gzipped file is being RENAMED and then looks like
a tarred file. The untar-utility tries very hard to recognize the structure
of this file and fails because it is actually a gzipped file, NOT a tarred
file.
