-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hey all... I was up on the kernel site and the latest version of udev on http://www.us.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/kernel/hotplug/ is udev-100, the latest RPM I've found for 10.1 is udev-085-30.11 Now the udev site says "please use the packages provided by your distro instead of trying to install from the source tree." The README has dire warnings "Integrating udev in the system is a whole lot of work, has complex dependencies and differs a lot from distro to distro. All major distros depend on udev these days and the system may not work without a proper installed version. The upstream udev project does not support or recommend to replace a distro's udev installation with the upstream version. The installation of a unmodified upstream version may render your system unusable." So does anyone know of an RPM of the latest or is running the -100 that is willing to pass on what worked and what didn't? I am running 2.6.16.13-4-default. I am still trying to find out why my aircard will work on the laptop and not the desktop when I use the same rules for both. When I set udevcontrol to log info most of the output is the same but there a bunch lines of identifier stuff that is different (I'd be happy to send it to someone, it is long...). I am hoping that upgrading might fix the problem. BTW since I am running this through gmail (long story) I'd even appreciate a smart remark or RTFM ;^) just to know this go through... - --- -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with SUSE - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFFBf2elC+PSm9+eB0RAilHAJ4uM06VA3njmXlARgyTl5MVV+uVkwCeLtr4 KmNZ62zgrduUMO9/NrVc9/I= =hLX2 -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

RTFM! Sorry, I've got no idea about your udev problem but I sympathise with your gmail problem, not receiving my own posts annoys the hell out of me. Incidentally, I upgraded my kernel to the vanilla 2.6.17-11 recently to try and get my bcm4306-based wireless card working (with some degree of success) but I didn't upgrade my udev. I haven't noticed any I'll effects yet, is a udev upgrade only necessary for 2.6.18rc kernels? Cheers, James.

There is a solution. I use gmail and receive *all* my own postings. I use fetchmail to dl mail from gmail and post via my isp using a my gmail address as $envelope_from. This way it is possible to use *any* "From: " address. Also gmail has no record of my posting so it appears as new gamil. mutt is a dog. :^) -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2

Sounds pretty nifty. I'm not that au fait with email headers and unfortunately I have to use windows most of the time at work, can I do a similar thing using Thunderbird's identities feature, ie. send through my work server but use my gmail identity? Sorry, that's a silly question, I'll try it out and see.

I'll have to look at this... BUT one problem I see is that I don't have a real isp. I have to use gmail as the smtp because my internet access is through cingular's EDGE/GSM network and afaik there is no smtp just the actual connection. When I get the time maybe I'll set up an exim/sendmail box or something.. Of course it's not worht it until I get the stupid card to work on the desktop.... - -- Quis custodiet ipsos custodes ?To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.? You mean that cingular does *not* provide you with email accounts? I find that hard to believe. http://www.cingular.com/sbusiness/network Supporting Bandwidth-Intensive Applications Combining high speed with low latency, BroadbandConnect offers mobile access to a broad range of business applications, including personal and business email, ....

You do not need exim or sendmail. Your SUSE install has postfix as a default and it works quite well. Also fetchmail to download mail to your local machine. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2

Thanks... Not sure about the 2.6.18rc. But since udev-085 is giving me problems on the desktop, I just wanted to see if a newer version would work. But when the kind of warnings that they put in the readme I definitely paws ;^) I can't afford to screw up my system....Yet ;^) Once I get the Sierra Aircard 860 running on the desktop then the laptop can go back to being a bleeding edge test system. Up grading the kernel is the next step I guess, I just hate doing that once everything else (vmware, changing serial_cs.c, etc) is set up and working... I usually wait until there is an RPM that is a couple of versions past what I have (e.g. 2.6.18 final rpm). Of well I guess I'll stop whining and do it this weekend... - -- Quis custodiet ipsos custodes ?To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.? If you need i386, you could rebuild the src.rpm. Now the udev site says "please use the packages provided by your distro instead of trying to install from the source tree." The README has dire warnings "Integrating udev in the system is a whole lot of work, has complex dependencies and differs a lot from distro to distro. Sounds like wise advice.
So does anyone know of an RPM of the latest or is running the -100 that is willing to pass on what worked and what didn't? I am running 2.6.16.13-4-default.
I would recommend upgrading your kernel to at least 2.6.16.21-0.13 for the security fixes, and I would suggest keeping the stock udev. I am using the package I built, but am running a 2.6.17.13 self-built kernel, as well as the 2.6.18-rc5-1.1-default (just for testing). If your version above is a typo, you are free to try the package referenced above. It works OK for me, but YMMV. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871
