The upgrade for my Toshiba laptop went fairly well. KDE4 is pretty much trash (no window "decoration", like a close button, only 1 desktop instead of 8, that kind of stuff), but KDE3 looks good, and all my stuff seems to be there. But not madwifi, so there was no connecting to the nis server. I plugged in with a cable, and was able to log on and try to reinstall madwifi. I've had no luck with that. I know about the domain change to madwifi-- project.org, but apparently there's no /suse/11.1 folder there yet. None of the installation methods worked at all. Has anybody else taken this on and figured out a solution? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hmm, isn't your card support by the ath5k driver built-into the kernel? Ciao, Marcus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Didn't know about that one. It isn't *automatically* supported by it, because it came up unconfigured. I'll try going into network devices setup and see if I can get it to accept that. Is it actually called ath5k, in case I need to type the module name in manually? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Marcus, The ath5k drive does *not* work for many toshiba laptops. I have two - a P35, and a P205D. Both have atheros cards and both require madwifi. The ath5k drives have never worked. The only working solution for 10.3 and 11.0 has been a package built with the ath_pci module. Every since 10.3, the only place I have found a working driver has been: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/schmolle1980/ I knew this was going to be a big bust for 11.1. I am just now doing my first 11.1 laptop install on the P35, which is the easier of the two to configure wireless (old model). I'll report back later tonight or in the morning. But my first thought is you will have to build from the .src.rpm out of the above repo after modifying the spec file version info before you will ever find a working madwifi for 11.1 -- David C. madwifi.org/suse/<version> had drivers that worked for me. http://madwifi-project.org/suse/ has them for versions up to 11.0 and they did work for me. I think we need to ask Helmut to do them for 11.1 too if you are missing them. Yes, That is much needed. Marcus, List For Toshiba laptops and others requiring the madwifi driver and the ath_pci module to work, I have a solution for openSuSE 11.1. (1) First, you need to checkout the svn trunk version of the driver: svn checkout http://svn.madwifi-project.org/madwifi/trunk madwifi (2) The make sure you have the kernel-source installed and also the gcc compiler. To install what is needed, just use yast -> software management -> then choose "filter: patterns" and go to the development section and put a check next to "Base Development", "C/C++ Development", and "Linux Kernel Development". Also look at the details of "Linux Kernel Development" and make sure the kernel-syms package is selected as well. Install them all. (3) change to the madwifi directory where the madwifi source was retrieved with 'svn checkout http://svn.madwifi-project.org/madwifi/trunk madwifi'. In the madwifi directory compile the package by typing: make then if no errors, type (as root) make install (4) Now blacklist the ath5k module and load the ath_pci module with the following commands (as root): rmmod ath5k (confirm its gone with 'lsmod | grep ath' ) use an editor and add 'blacklist ath5k' to the top of /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist modprobe -v ath_pci (5) Now use yast to configure your new network interface "ath0". Go to yast -> network devices -> network settings. Under the Global tab, configure to use traditional ifup and "Change Default Route via DHCP". (you can change this back to knetworkmanager after your done, but there is a yast bug that keep you from being able to set your hostname if knetwork manager is selected) Under the Overview tab, select the new (unconfigured) Atheros 5001X card, then under the General tab select Activate "On Cable Connection" (I know sounds weird) and user control for non-root with kinternet. Next, the address tab, select DHCP or provide a configurations, Then AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, under the Hardware tab, set "Module Name" to "ath_pci". Then just configure you wireless security and your done. (6) After you exit yast, check that you have "ath0" present and configured with an ip address using "ifconfig", That's it! I'll see if I can build a set of i586 rpms for 11.1 and if that works, I'll build the x86-64 and make them available until the openSuSE build service can get the packages built. Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays, whatever the case may be. It sure is good to finally be able to pull the plug on 11.1 and go wireless again ;-) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. I have no knowledge of your P35, but mine worked fine with the ath5k module after I got rid of the "card" that 11.1 added to my NIC configuration, and reconfigured my original card to use ath5k instead of ath_pci. I'm using it to write this message. The one that the 11.1 upgrade provided couldn't be activated. Once I reconfigured my original wireless card, I was able to delete the one that had been added.
