[opensuse] What happened to "more"?
OpenSuse Leap 15.0 with the KDE/Plasma desktop - The behavior of the command more has changed, it use to print out the number of lines to fill a konsole screen and then pause waiting for the user to hit the space bar and then continue to print out another konsole screen full of lines. Now it just prints on a single konsole screen full of lines and exits! What happened to more and can I fix it to go back to being the good ol more command that I loved so much? ISTR using that, but it was a _long_ time ago. How about 'less' ? -- Per Jessen, Zürich (2.8°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free dynamic DNS, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

The man page looks promissing. It responds to page up/dn, but not to end/start. I find it confusing. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.0 x86_64 at Telcontar)

Checked it here. One of the differences between more and less is that more exits when reaching the end of the file. So if the file is shorter than what fits on the screen you'll never be prompted for a 'space'. If it does work differently for you - maybe some console settings differ? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Marc... Don't see that here. I do use more, but the behaviour ( in yakuake ) is like before, no changes.

That's normal behaviour if your file is short enough to fit onto a single screen without scrolling, I think. -- Liam Proven - Technical Writer, SUSE Linux s.r.o. Hi Liam, thanks for your input, and no I was applying more to long files such as the logfiles and observed the failure I reported.. No matter really, I am slowing re-training my fingers to do less instead... That (and because I'm a lazy slow typer anyhow) I've aliased the pager to 'm' since more than 20 years. I just changed the alias definition when less became more popular :D -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Oh, I see. Sorry for the noise, then. I do sometimes still type "more" by mistake when I really should use "less" -- it's a hard habit to break. Possibly removing/renaming the old ``more'' binary and replacing it with a symlink to ``less'' might be a better move, and should result in at least some apps using ``less'' for scrolling output. The ability to go backwards is a killer feature for me. -- Liam Proven - Technical Writer, SUSE Linux s.r.o.
