RE: [SLE] Epson printers and SuSE 7.3 Pro.
Hi Brian, I have a C60 and it works perfectly. I'm using the parallel port interface, not the USB interface. The port should be set to EPP/ECP if you want to monitor the printer. There's a nice standalone utility called mtink that monitors the ink quantity, cleans cartridge heads, etc., found here: http://xwtools.automatix.de/english/startE.htm I tried CUPS but it kept seg-faulting on me so I switched to LPRng and haven't had any problems since. The only problem (other than the price of ink) is that there isn't a native C60 or C80 driver and/or filter doo-higgee with LPRng, so I've been using the Color Stylus II driver without any problems. I would prefer a native driver via CUPS and gimp-print, but I'm planning on upgrading to 8.0 shortly (the local Micro Center was sold out believe it or not) and after reading this article: http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/jsmeix_print-einrichten-80.html it seems it would be wise to hold off on CUPS until after the upgrade. If I had to do it over again, I think the C80 would be the better choice. I know a few people with C80's and it's much quieter than the C60, not to mention the print quality is much better. Cheers, -jrh
I am seriously considering purchasing an Epson printer (C60 or C80) and would like to hear any experiences that people have had using these printers with SuSE. I am using SUSE 7.3 Pro.
Cheers,
Brian

Brian The only reason it lacks drivers is because the printer is actually newer than SuSE 7.3. They can only include drivers for printers that exist at the time

Maybe 8.1 will be a smoother upgrade? Too bad about the 7.3 RPMs, it would have made life a lot easier for me .-( Well, all I can say at this point is that the jury is still out as to what kind of printer I will get. Cheers, Brian

Brian ======================== Brian, I think you will find and most here using 8.0 will agree, the printer drivers included with 8.0 are much better than 7.3! I think you will also find that for the most of us that have upgraded to 8.0, even the ones that have had minor problems, we wouldn't go back! It is a worthwhile upgrade and better suited to newbies than previous versions. Whatever printer you decide on, wheither HP or Epson, you will be satisfied with in SuSE 8! My printing on the HP960Cse printer with 8.0 was a major change in speed and quality!

As soon as I saw that baby perform, I knew that I had to have it. While it may be possible that the printer drivers are much better in SuSE 8, I am wondering if there isn't a native driver that can be installed for SuSE 7.3? Isn't there a source package that can be compiled? Many thanks to all on the list for their support and advice so far. Now all I need to do is get this baby working :-) BTW, I am using the parallel connection to my SuSE box. Cheers, Brian

Try gimp-print. It has quite a few drivers for Epson printers. And works well with CUPS. I use it with an Epson Stylus C60 under SuSE 7.2. -- Robert Wohlfarth rjwohlfar@galaxyinternet.net "Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?" -- Matthew 6:25b

AFAIK, there are no RPM's for gimp-print. I downloaded the tarball. Compiled it with support for CUPS. The correct driver appears in the CUPS configuration. I don't know if it appears under YaST/YaST2. Gimp-print came from linuxprinting.org: http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_driver.cgi?driver=gimp-print. There are links to installation instructions on the site too. If you're having specific problems, e-mail me the details and I'll try help. No guarantees. -- Robert Wohlfarth rjwohlfar@galaxyinternet.net "Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?" -- Matthew 6:25b

I don't know about that model of epson printer but I have a Epson Color 880 that worked very well under 7.3 and in 8.0. I believe that it is listed under yast2 in both systems. On Fri, 2002-05-24 at 03:20, Forrest Halford wrote:

And as I mentioned, I have been using CUPS and GimpPrint at least since 7.1 with SuSE, and before that on Mandrake. I have never had any problems except that under SuSE it is somewhat difficult to get rid of the LP system it installs because it insists on reinstalling it on a regular basis when I am in adding new software. This usually kills my lpr commands that are associated with Cups. Other than that I don't think I have ever had a segmentation fault while printing under CUPS, or for that matter much of any printing system.
OK..all this talk about Epsons got me going. My wife didn't really need her Epson 880 so she gave it up to me. I installed it and now I can only print from Mozilla and KDE apps. OpenOffice acts like it's printing but there is no output...muttprint use to work fine and now it's flaking. I can have Mozilla use muttprint as the filter and it works just fine. Do any of you have ANY ideas as to why muttprint would flake (yes, I changed the .muttprintrc file to reflect the new printer name) .. and why OpenOffice thinks it's sending jobs to the printer and they go off into never-never land? lpq pukes when trying to read the configs of the printer as well. -=Ben --=====-----=====-- mailto:ben@whack.org --=====-- If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say that the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little. -GC --=====-----=====--
